Abstract:
An improved electrostatic spray gun is disclosed including an electrically conductive metal handle assembly, an electrically insulative barrel assembly, and an electrically insulative nozzle assembly terminating at its forward end in a small diameter discharge orifice through which the coating material is ejected. An ionizing electrode protrudes from the discharge orifice. The flow of material through the barrel and the nozzle assembly is controlled by a trigger actuated needle and seat valve assembly close to the discharge orifice and in axial alignment with an annular fluid flow passageway in the barrel portion of the gun. A high value resistor is disposed in the barrel portion of the gun and a second lower value resistor is disposed inside the needle valve immediately upstream of the ionizing electrode. The elements of the improved electrostatic spray gun cooperate to provide clean and safe operation.

Abstract:
Various exemplary illustrations of an electrode assembly for an electrostatic atomizer, for example for a rotation atomizer, and exemplary methods of making and/or using the same, are disclosed. An exemplary electrode assembly may include an electrode holder arrangement for holding at least one electrode creating an electrostatic field about a symmetrical axis, wherein there is a dielectric material for influencing a discharge current component extending in the direction of the symmetrical axis.
Abstract:
An enhanced electrostatic paint deposition apparatus (10) comprising a nozzle (16), a conduit (14) coupled to the nozzle for supplying paint (12) thereto, and a plurality of electrically conductive whiskers (18) positioned within the nozzle for applying an electrostatic charge to droplets of the paint. Each of the whiskers terminates in a jagged end (30) for enabling the droplets to acquire an enhanced electric charge. The whiskers may be provided with lengths which are tailored to provide an array of whiskers with a desired three-dimensional curvature for controlling the focussing field on the paint droplets. Each whisker is secured to a holder (22) which is, in turn, secured to a porous grid (20) whose mesh size is selected to divide that paint into narrow streams of desired size, which exit nozzle 16 in droplet form. The holder is configured by decreasing its center portion (28) in dimension to tume the holder's current limiting capabilities. Pulsed negative high voltage is applied to the whiskers for enabling them to negatively charge the paint. Phased deflector plates 22, 24, 26 are provided to steer the paint stream.

Abstract:
An alternator, such as for use in an electrostatic spray gun, comprises an electromagnetic alternator, a housing and an impeller. The electromagnetic alternator has a shaft. The electromagnetic alternator is disposed within the housing. The housing has an air aperture. The impeller is mounted to the shaft within the housing so as to be aligned with the air aperture. The impeller includes blades having curved leading and trailing edges. In one embodiment, each blade has a curvature so as to be perpendicular to the air aperture across an entire arc over which each impeller blade has a line of sight of the air aperture.
