Abstract: An applicator wheel and guide system are provided in order to accurately align and position web material, either as discrete lengths or as a continuous strip, to articles or a continuous web. Specifically, the guide system includes a lateral edge guide disc rotatable with the applicator wheel which exhibits an edge guide surface at a first point along the periphery of the wheel applicator to precisely laterally align the web material and which moves radially inward from the surface of the applicator wheel at an application point so as not to obstruct the application of the web material to the articles or continuous web moved at a constant rate thereby. Moreover, the guide system includes the provision of an air bar for forming a loop in the supplied strip of web material prior to handling by the wheel applicator. The air bar eliminates roller inertia and guarantees consistent lengths of discrete lengths of web material to be applied to articles or a web when used on a wobbler arm. The edge guide and the air bar increase the accuracy with which web material can be successfully applied to articles or a web with regard to lateral and length alignment, respectively.

Abstract: An apparatus for applying tape, having adhesive on both of its faces, to a surface comprises an applicator drum having a cylindrical periphery that receives the tape and a series of slots extending transversely to the periphery. The applicator drum is mounted on a shaft which can be driven by a motor. The shaft is, in turn, mounted on a lever which can be pivoted by a solenoid to translate the drum toward and away from the surface. The tape is cut into discreet lengths on the drum by a knife which registers in interfitting engagement with each of the slots in the drum periphery when translated away from the surface. The solenoid and motor are synchronously operated to rotate the drum to put a length of tape in position for transfer to the surface, to translate the drum toward the surface to complete the transfer, and to translate the drum away from the surface to register the knife in interfitting engagement with a drum slot and thereby cut a next length of tape for subsequent transfer.

Abstract: Apparatus for feeding and applying a length of an adhesive tape to a reusable envelope closure. Tape is fed from a supply roll by a draw roll which is in contact with the adhesive surface of the tape to frictionally advance the tape between a stationary knife blade and a rotary knife blade. The tape is cut to a desired length by the cooperating edges of the knife blades and delivered to a vacuum roll which transports the cut length of tape to the envelope and presses it onto the envelope to form a part of the reusable closure. A cooperating convex and concave roller forms the tape into a V prior to it being cut to rigidify it as it is cut. Means are also provided to vary the length of tape which is cut and to stop operation of the apparatus upon sensing the absence of an envelope beneath the apparatus.

An upper knockdown kickout guide and a lower knockdown kickout move the knockdown into a diagonal position and impel it forward such that the knockdown is momentarily airborne.
