Abstract:
Ablation-type printing plates having increased shelf-life are produced using a melamine resin free of water prior to use. A representative production sequence includes providing a substrate having an oleophilic surface; coating, over the substrate, an oleophilic resin composition having (A) a resin phase consisting essentially of a melamine resin substantially free of water and a resole resin, the resole resin being present in an amount ranging from 0% to 28% by weight of dry film, (B) a near-IR absorber dispersed within the resin phase, and (C) a sulfonic acid catalyst dispersed within the resin phase and being present in an amount ranging from 0.7% to 1.6% by weight of dry film; curing the resin composition to produce a dry film; following resin curing, coating an oleophobic polymer composition over the cured resin composition; and curing the oleophobic polymer composition.

Abstract:
A novel ink formulation, especially useful in Driography printing, is disclosed. The ink formulation comprises a basic planographic printing ink vehicle, a pigment, a modifying varnish and a flow control agent to provide an ink, especially suitable for use in Driography, which exhibits desirable hangling-viscosities under ambient conditions, improved rheological properties under severe press-operating conditions, and provides printings having sharp delineation, fidelity and excellent reproducibility in depth of color tones in long press runs. The basic printing ink vehicle may be a vehicle designed for either sheet-fed or heat-set printing systems. The novel ink formulation is designed to have a high viscosity and avoid becoming pseudoplastic in its behavior at higher press temperatures, which generally can range from about 85.degree. F. to 125.degree. F., and preferably, avoids becoming pseudoplastic at temperatures up to about 140.degree. F. or more.
Abstract:
Presensitized planographic printing plate for use in dry planography. A positive acting plate having a flexible base and a relatively thick (0.02 to 2.00 mil) silicone rubber layer, overlying a photo-polymerizable and photoadhesive-layer. Upon exposure to light through a positive transparency, the photoadhesive layer in the exposed non-image area polymerizes and adheres firmly to the thick silicone rubber overlayer, but the photoadhesive layer in the unexposed image area remains nonadhesive to the silicone overlayer. Following the exposure, the surface of the plate is treated with developing liquid capable of swelling silicone rubber. The thick silicone rubber layer in the unexposed image area is easily removed, exposing a sharp image of oleophilic photoadhesive layer underlying the removed silicone layer, while the silicone rubber layer in the exposed background area remains bound to the photoadhesive underlayer. The exposed surface of the photoadhesive layer accepts ink from inking rollers, while the silicone rubber background area does not remove ink from the rollers, and thus remains ink-free.
Abstract:
Lithographic ink is suspended in a hydrophilic medium of high viscoity at low rates of shear and relatively low vscosity at high rates of shear to give a suspension which can be used in lithographic printing without water or fountain solution.
Abstract:
An ink composition useful for digital offset printing applications comprises a colorant and a plurality of curable compounds. The compounds have Hansen solubility parameters as described herein, and the resulting ink composition is both compatible with certain dampening fluids and has certain rheological properties, including a low viscosity.
Abstract:
A seamless can in which an ink layer is transferred onto a can body thereof by a curved surface printing is provided. The ink layer which has been transferred has an overlapping portion which is formed by mutually overlapping a front-end portion of the ink layer and a rear-end portion of the ink layer in a circumferential direction of the can body. An ink area ratio for at least one of the front-end portion and the rear-end portion is smaller than an ink area ratio of an intermediate portion of the ink layer which is adjacent to and continuous with the overlapping portion and excludes the overlapping portion.

Abstract:
A non-ablative negative-working imageable element has first and second polymeric layers under a crosslinked silicone rubber layer. These elements can be used in a simple method to provide lithographic printing plates useful for waterless printing (no fountain solution). Processing after imaging is relatively simple using either water or an aqueous solution containing very little organic solvent to remove the imaged regions. The crosslinked silicone rubber layer is ink-repelling and only the first layer that is closest to the substrate contains an infrared radiation absorbing compound to provide thermal sensitivity.
Abstract:
A printing unit of a rotary printing press utilizes a "waterless" planographic printing plate which is fastened on a printing cylinder. This "waterless" planographic printing plate receives ink from a short inking unit and directly prints a material to be printed. An additional printing cylinder, that is also equipped with a "waterless" planographic printing plate, acts as the counterpressure cylinder.
