A secondary carbon atom in an alkane, including alkyl groups attached to aromatic rings, or cycloalkane is peroxidized by molecular oxygen to the corresponding hydroperoxide in the absence of a catalyst. The peroxidation is carried out in the presence of a tertiary hydroperoxide initiator which provides the free radicals needed to maintain the reaction. The amount of tertiary alcohol in the initiator is limited. The initial product of the peroxidation contains the secondary hydroperoxide as well as unreacted hydrocarbon, unreacted tertiary hydroperoxide and tertiary alcohol. The tertiary alcohol is removed as an azeotrope with part of the unreacted hydrocarbon which may be then separated from the alcohol and recycled. A second azeotropic distillation follows where the unreacted tertiary hydroperoxide is removed as an azeotrope with the rest of the unreacted hydrocarbon. This azeotrope is directly recycled to the peroxidation reaction.

A one-step process for preparing 2,5-dimethylhexane-2,5-dihydroperoxide and its alkyl derivatives comprises: (1) adding sulfuric acid to a 60-70% hydrogen peroxide solution to form a first reaction mixture where the first mixture is controlled at a temperature in the range of from about -10.degree. C. to about 10.degree. C.; (2) adding 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-dihydroxy hexane to the mixture held at a temperature in the range of from about -10.degree. C. to about 10.degree. C. or lower to form a second reaction mixture and maintaining the second mixture at a temperature in the range of from about 20.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C. for about 5 minutes to about 5 hours to form a slurry containing the solid product of 2,5-dimethylhexane-2,5-dihydroperoxide, unreacted reactants and impurities; (3) lowering the temperature of the slurry to the range of from about -10.degree. C. to about 10.degree. C.; (4) removing unreacted reactants and impurities from the solid product and optionally, washing the solid product; and (5) adding sulfated alkyl alcohol, which is prepared by adding the alkyl alcohol to sulfuric acid, to the solid product to form a third reaction mixture and maintaining the third mixture at about 30.degree. C. to about 60.degree. C. for about 1 to about 5 hours to prepare the alkyl derivatives.

Isobutane is injected into a liquid mixture concurrently with the injection of an oxygen-containing gas. Molybdenum catalyst is present. The oxidation is selective for the formation of tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) so that the proportions of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), acetone, methanol, carbon dioxide or other less desirable products are relatively low. The tertiary butyl hydroperoxide produced by the reaction and/or the di-tertiary butyl peroxide in the reaction mixture remain in the reaction mixture while continuously distilling a product stream rich in tertiary butyl alcohol and those components boiling below TBA. After appropriate processing, such product stream is utilized as a blending component for gasoline.

Isobutane is oxidized in a pressurized reactor in the presence of a solubilized molybdenum catalyst to produce a mixture of tertiary butyl alcohol, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, methanol, acetone, and other oxygen containing compounds. Unreacted isobutane is recycled. Streams of normally gaseous components, comprising carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are withdrawn from the effluent streams. A liquid stream withdrawn from the reactor, after being debutanized, is subjected to a thermal decomposition zone under several atmospheres pressure at about 280.degree. F. for from 2 to about 8 hours to reduce the concentration of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide.The liquid derived from the decomposition zone is distilled to provide a distillate stream comprising predominantly tertiary butyl alcohol and a minor proportion of methanol. Said distillate stream is heat treated to destroy residual TBHP and then transferred to a gasoline blending zone in which it is added to hydrocarbons. Said oxygen-containing fuel is blended as if it were a technical grade of tertiary butyl alcohol, notwithstanding the fact that measurable amounts of acetone, methanol, and/or related oxygen containing compounds might be present.
