摘要: A franking machine is disclosed in which the accounting and control circuits of the meter are housed in a secure housing and a printing device for printing a franking impression is located exterior to the secure housing and is connected to the accounting and control circuits. Strings of print data sent to the printing device are returned in a succeeding print cycle to a check circuit in the housing to check integrity of the print data received by the printing device. If desired the print data strings may include a security code. In order to detect if the printing device has been disconnected from the meter, the meter includes a circuit to send a pulse train to the printing device via the connection for print data and to receive a pulse train from the printing device. The circuit compares the pulse trains and if the comparison is unsuccessful inhibits further franking operations.

摘要: This invention relates to a system for certifying the accuracy of postage payments based on the weights of mail pieces. The expected weight of each mail piece is determined and a mail processing unit receives data relative to the contents to be inserted into an envelope that together form the mail pieces. A high speed weighing scale is located downstream from the mail processing unit to receive the mail pieces after the mail processing unit has inserted selected materials into envelopes. A comparison is made between the expected weight of each mail piece and its measured weight. If the measured weight of a mail piece is found different than the actual weight beyond certain tolerances, it could be rejected. If a large number of mail pieces exhibit a divergence between the estimated weight and the actual weight, the mail processing unit will be disabled and an examination made to determine what caused the discrepancies in the weights. If there is correlation between the anticipated weights and the measured weights, the mail pieces are placed in trays or other suitable containers to be delivered to the Post Office. A history of mail runs and their accuracy with regard to weight is maintained for record purposes.

摘要: A method and apparatus is described for checking the operation of a thermal dot printer during a printing cycle. When a pattern is to be printed a count of the number of printing elements intended to be operated in the cycle is stored. A signal indicative of the total current drawn from a supply by the operated printing elements is compared with the stored count. If the comparison indicates that all or a sufficient number of elements have been operated to effect printing, operation of the printing elements in further printing cycles is permitted otherwise further printing is inhibited. In an alternative method the printing elements are operated to print data in machine readable form and the data is read to produce a signal which is compared with data intended to be printed. The printing elements may print the data in a form for visual inspection and in machine readable form. The printer may form part of a franking machine in which the printed data is a franking of a mail item.

摘要: An electronic postal meter is provided with a date setter having an access door coupled to a switch. The position of the switch is signalled to the internal computer, in order to effect a warning indication if the access or dater door is open. The computer further inhibits operation of the postal meter upon the initial application of power to the postal meter, until the dater door has been opened and closed at least once. Means coupled to the computer are provided for enabling operation of the meter when the dater door is closed. This allows the meter to be enabled for operation without first opening and then closing the dater door each time the meter is turned on. The enabling means may be located remote from the meter and may comprise a remote keyboard having a check date warning override key.

摘要: A postage value determining and control circuit for use in a continuous mail sorting and postage imprinting system which automatically weighs and meters each piece of mail. The system is designed to rapidly handle a large quantity of mixed mail. Mixed mail is continuously and synchronously fed in seriatim along a continuous feed path. Unsealed envelopes have their flaps wetted and sealed. All the envelopes are stopped at a weighing station where they are weighed, and the postage corresponding to their particular weight is computed. The determined postage value is used to continuously reset a postage meter which imprints the required postage upon each envelope as it arrives at a metering station. The metering and weighing functions of the system are synchronized such that the postage meter will imprint the proper postage upon each piece of mail, despite the fact that several envelopes may be simultaneously in transit along the feed path. Overweight pieces of mail are rejected from the feed path prior to their reaching the postage meter station. Metered and overweight pieces of mail are separately stacked.

摘要: A method is provided for printing and regenerating mailpiece content material in a mailpiece creation system having a controller for modulating the flow of data a printing device. The method comprising the steps of producing an electronic version of the mailpiece content material and generating print stream data indicative of the mailpiece content material. The print stream is then segmented into data sets/packets indicative of a self-contained pages of mailpiece content material. The data packets each include page-based data and an object-data dictionary associated with the page-based data. The data packets are then stored as electronic files in an electronic buffer and, from the electronic buffer, transmitted during a first data transmission to the integrated printer. After the pages are printed, the electronic files of self-contained pages are moved from the electronic buffer to a storage device. Should any pages be identified as having been unsuccessfully printed, the system controller issues a command signal to regenerate the unsuccessfully processed pages in a second data transmission. This final step can be performed automatically or manually.

摘要: The present invention relates to a system and method for processing residual mail to automatically correct the postage therefor. A first class of service that was used to originally process the residual mail and a second class of service to which a postage value originally applied to the residual mail is to be corrected are received. A postage correction table is then generated from a first rate table corresponding to the first class of service and a second rate table corresponding to the second class of service. A postage correction amount for each piece of residual mail is determined based upon the postage correction table. The postage correction table may include a plurality of weight breaks and a plurality of corresponding postage correction rates and/or dimension based charges, and the postage correction amount may be based on a measured weight and/or dimension of each pieces of residual mail.

摘要: In a mechanical system, especially a mail handling system, an operator needs a system and method for gathering runtime information from sensors distributed throughout the machine. Specific information gathered is the number of recoverable faults for various mechanical subsystems, or modules. A recoverable fault is an occurrence of a motion state that could result in a malfunction or jam in the mechanical system but ultimately does not. These near-misses are important to note in order to improve serviceability of the mechanical system. Moreover, the present invention cross-links the data gathered by performance counters with respect to one module with information obtained in other modules. By taking the performance counter data and module information, an operator can foresee where potential malfunctions or jams are likely to occur.

摘要: A meter and/or base (or computer), coupled to one or more modems, perform automated fraud reporting to a service center upon detection of particular ones of detectable faults. Diagnostic software and/or tamper detection devices test the meter to ensure that the meter operates in an expected manner. A detected fault can be classified into one or more categories or levels. For faults within certain levels, an alarm message is sent to the service center. Corrective action can be performed in accordance with a response from the service center. For major faults, the meter can be disabled until service is performed and the alarm message can be sent to the postal inspectors.
