A packet scheduler controls dispatch of packets containing constant bit rate (CBR) or real time variable bit rate (rt-VBR) at an ingress operation of multiplexing the packets into payloads of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) bearer virtual circuit connection. Packets can be queued in one of a number of queues according to priority. The scheduler controls assembly of common part sublayer payload data units (CPS-PDU) comprising any unused octets from a previous packet partially dispatched, and whole packets in order of priority. If a holdover timer period expires before a common part sublayer payload data unit is completed, the payload of that data unit is packed with null data; and dispatched. The packet dispatch is controlled so as to match the traffic characteristics of an underlying bearer channel.

A central station of a cable television distribution network transmits TDM frames comprising distribution information and overhead information downstream to customer terminals, and determines corresponding upstream TDMA frames by including an upstream frame identity in the overhead information of each downstream frame. Each terminal buffers asynchronous information for upstream transmission, and stores an upstream frame identity which it is assigned. On detecting this frame identity in the downstream overhead information, the terminal transmit a buffer queue size in an assigned time slot of the corresponding upstream frame. The central station uses the queue sizes from the terminals to allocate time slots in the upstream frames to terminals, by including their terminal addresses in the downstream overhead information, for transmission of the buffered asynchronous information. The central station can also assign time slots to the terminals for transmission of isochronous information.

A system and method of switching information in a time division multiplexed (TDM) communications network are described. The TDM time slots correspond to channels of circuit information. A circuit interface receives information from the TDM communication network, extracts circuit data therefrom, and provides the extracted circuit data on an internal bus. It also receives circuit data from an internal bus and transmits the data received from the internal bus on to the TDM communications network. A switching fabric receives packets having a header and a payload in which the header includes information identifying a destination for the packet and in which the fabric transmits a received packet in accordance with the destination identification in the packet header. Adaptation logic, in response to the circuit interface, packs information from multiple circuits into a payload of a packet and schedules the delivery of such a packet to the fabric. The adaptation logic receives packets from the switching fabric; and merges circuit data from multiple packets onto an identified channel.

First and second partially filled ATM cells are removed from a cell stream and merged into a third ATM cell. The third ATM cell may then be inserted back into the cell stream. The third ATM cell may include header information indicative of the number of partially filled ATM cells from which it was created. To accommodate these operations, a data communication device, such as an ATM switch, is configured to identify partially filled ATM cells within an ATM cell stream. The device is also configured to merge at least two of the partially filled ATM cells into a merged ATM cell and to insert the merged ATM cell back into the ATM cell stream. Identifying partially filled ATM cells may involve use of a lookup table stored in a computer readable medium and indexable using logical connection identification information. The scheme can be used on a link-by-link basis within an ATM network or across multiple hops within such a network for combining cells traveling along a common route. The scheme is not limited to combining information on the same virtual channel or information which travels only between a common source and destination.

A base station in a mobile communication system, which enables maintenance of a normal transmission interval of data output, and effective usage of bands, is disclosed. Quality checking part provided in a base station BS rejects those data which the base station has failed to receive in a good receiving state. Instead, quality checking part inserts an invalid data shorter than a valid data. In this way, a vacancy is created in the relevant band or slot correspondingly to a difference between the length of a valid data length and the length of an invalid or dummy data length. This vacant band can be utilized by another user, resulting in that the utilization efficiency of link between the base station and an MSC (Mobile Switching Center) is improved.
