    摘要: An apparatus for producing a thixotropic metallic melt by simultaneously controlledly cooling and stirring the melt to form solid particles of a first phase suspended in a residual liquid second phase. Vigorous stirring of the metallic melt results in the formation of degenerate dendritic particles having substantially spheroidal shapes. The metallic melt is stirred to rapidly and efficiently circulate the forming semi-solid slurry. Circulation of the forming semi-solid slurry results in a substantially uniform temperature throughout. Through precision stirring and cooling, a semi-solid slurry is formed having a first solid phase of about 70-80 wt. % suspended in a second liquid phase.

During casting, the nozzle (13) of a casting device is brought into tight-fitting abutment against the outer end of the element, and the molten metal alloy is cast into the mold through the nozzle (13), the passage (15) in the element (14) and the runner (8) of the mold. After casting of the mold, the nozzle (13) is pressed against the element (14) with a considerably greater force than its abutting force during casting, thus causing the element to be displaced axially into the mold to form a fight-fitting abutment against the surface (16) in the runner (8) and blocking the latter, enabling the nozzle (13) to be withdrawn without cast metal flowing out from the mold.

    摘要: Apparatus for casting metals, especially alloys with low melting points, has a melt container which is connected to a mold via a casting line. A standpipe branches off from the casting line in the melt container. The melt is covered by an inert fluid blanket and the level of melt in the melt container is monitored and maintained such that at least a portion of the standpipe is surrounded by the melt. An overflow valve selectively opens or closes an overflow hole in the standpipe, the overflow hole being immersed in the inert fluid, to adjust the level of melt in the casting line.

    摘要: Process and apparatus for vertical continuous casting of metal in at lest one hot-top mold with metal supplied at constant level. The object of the invention is to provide a process and an apparatus that make it possible, while supplying metal at constant level, to avoid non-uniform temperature gradients, turbulence, and waste of metal. According to the invention this is achieved by coordinating the level, flow rate and distribution of molten metal to each hot-top mold from the outlet opening of a smelting furnace. This is produced by a pouring spout or trough that is supported through the upper wall area of each hot-top mold to supply molten metal to each hot-top mold through central outlet openings in the side walls of the trough, with the bottom of the trough being in a plane below the level of the outlet opening of the smelting furnace and below the upper surface of the melt in the hot-top mold, and with the trough outlet openings supplying molten metal to the center of each mold and causing it to flow outwardly therefrom.

    摘要: A launder system for supplying molten metal from a crucible to a casting mould or a secondary process has a nozzle with a filter positioned therein to filter the molten metal as it flows through the nozzle. The nozzle and filter assembly is removably attachable to the launder system, and is used once and then replaced by a new nozzle and filter assembly. Efficient cleaning of the molten metal thus occurs without an increase in blockage due to the filter. Additionally, the scrapping rate of the launder system is reduced, allowing multiple usage of the launder.

    摘要: A method of making a casting comprising the steps of, at a casting station, feeding molten metal from a primary source of molten metal into a mould cavity through an ingate below the top of the mould cavity, placing the cavity out of feeding relationship with the primary source by changing the orientation of the cavity relative to the direction of gravity to prevent flow of molten metal from the cavity towards the primary source and to permit of flow of metal from a secondary source to the cavity, the cavity being continuously connected to the primary source during said change of orientation, transferring the mould cavity to a cooling station spaced from the casting station and, at the cooling station, permitting molten metal to flow to the cavity from the secondary source while the metal in the cavity solidifies.

    摘要: An apparatus for replaceably mounting a pouring tube in engagement with a discharge nozzle of a vessel includes an arm mounted for pivotal movement about a vertical axis and for tilting movement about a horizontal axis. A first end of the arm has a fixture for supporting a pouring tube. An operating member is mounted adjacent a second end of the arm to tilt the arm about the horizontal axis between a clamping position, where the pouring tube is pressed against a discharge nozzle of a vessel, and an open position, where the pouring tube is spaced from the discharge nozzle. When the arm is in the open position it may be pivoted about the vertical axis between a first position, where the pouring tube is aligned with the discharge nozzle, and a second position, where the pouring tube is spaced from the discharge nozzle. The operating member includes a toggle joint movable between an expanded position and a buckled position, a spring operable between the arm and the toggle joint for biasing the toggle joint to the buckled position thereof, and an actuating member for moving the toggle joint between the buckled position and the expanded position against the force of the spring.
