    Abstract: A multiple stage process is described for the catalytic hydrodesulfurization and hydrodemetallization of a residual petroleum oil boiling above the gasoline range. The product of the process comprises essentially material boiling above the gasoline range and comprises little material boiling below the initial boiling point of the residual oil feed. The hydrodesulfurization-demetallization process comprises an initial stage involving relatively high hydrogen pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising a relatively low proportion of catalytically active hydrogenation metals. The process employs a final stage in series having a relatively lower hydrogen pressure and a catalyst comprising a relatively higher proportion of hydrogenation metals. The stream entering the final stage contains an amount up to 10, 20 or even 25 weight percent of the asphaltene content of the charge to the first stage while the effluent from the final stage is essentially free of asphaltenes.

    Abstract: This invention provides a method for the preparation of insulating oil having good oxidation stability, electric characteristics and resistance to copper corrosion which comprises subjecting a distillate (stock) within a temperature range from 250.degree. to 400.degree. C. in terms of the boiling point at atmospheric pressure to solvent refining to a desulfurization from 30 to 75% by weight to give a raffinate, said distillate having been obtained either by distillation at atmospheric pressure of a paraffin- or mixture-base crude oil and/or by distillation under reduced pressure of a residual oil from the atmospheric pressure distillation, subjecting said raffinate to hydrogenating refining to a desulfurization from 40 to 90% by weight and subjecting the refined product to solvent dewaxing, and if necessary, subsequently subjecting the dewaxed product to clay treatment to a sulfur content of the final product from 0.1 to 0.35% by weight.

    Abstract: A method for producing uninhibited transformer oil is disclosed which includes isolating a petroleum distillate that is primarily naphthenic and aromatic in character, boiling above 400.degree.F, having a viscosity between 50 and 100 SSU at 100.degree.F, and containing sulfur compounds; contacting the distillate with a solvent selective for aromatic hydrocarbons under conditions to produce a raffinate phase containing 15-30%v aromatic hydrocarbons; hydrotreating the raffinate phase to reduce the nitrogen content to at most 25 PPM, to maintain the sulfur content greater than 0.08%w, and to maintain the aromatic hydrocarbon content greater than 15%v. The product is an uninhibited transformer oil, and it can be further improved by regenerative clay treatment and by the addition of certain aromatic hydrocarbon compounds containing two or more six carbon membered fused or unfused rings, at least one of which is a benzene ring.

    Abstract: A used lubricating oil reclamation apparatus in which filters, heat exchangers, a vaporizer unit, pumps and other necessary equipment are all contained in a wheeled cabinet. The oil to be reclaimed is pumped through a warming heat exchanger, a first filter, a vaporizer unit, and further filters, after which appropriate additives are mixed into the decontaminated oil in a mixing tank. A vacuum is maintained on the vaporizer unit to exhaust the vapours from it via the heat exchanger and a condensate tank.
