    Abstract: A rotary engine includes an insert having a pilot subchamber defined therein and communicating with the internal cavity of the engine. A pilot fuel injector has a tip in communication with the pilot subchamber. An ignition element extends into an element cavity defined through the insert adjacent the pilot subchamber. The element cavity is in communication with the pilot subchamber through a communication opening defined in the insert between the element cavity and the pilot subchamber. The communication opening is smaller than a portion of the ignition element adjacent the communication opening such as to prevent the portion of the ignition element from completely passing through the communication opening upon breaking off of the portion of the ignition element from a remainder of the ignition element. An outer body for a rotary engine and a method of combusting fuel in a rotary engine are also provided.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting at least one non-functional combustion chamber of an engine comprising a plurality of combustion chambers are described herein. In response to detecting a partial output power loss of the engine, one of the plurality of combustion chambers is assessed by monitoring an engine parameter indicative of an output power of the engine, determining whether a change in the engine parameter has occurred, when the change has occurred, determining that the combustion chamber is functional, and when no change has occurred, determining that the combustion chamber is non-functional and discontinuing fuel injection to the non-functional combustion chamber.

    Abstract: A rotary internal combustion engine includes outer and inner housings defining an enclosure therebetween, and first and second side housings disposed on opposite sides of the outer housing. The inner housing is rotatable relative to the outer housing and at least two barriers divide the enclosure into a combustion chamber and an exhaust chamber. At least one barrier is rotatable relative to at least one other barrier and at least one barrier comprises a retractable barrier mounted along a pivot axis and is pivotable between an extended position and a retracted position. An intake port, exhaust port, and ignition source are also provided. The rotary internal combustion engine further includes a cylindrical stationary shaft disposed inside the inner housing and oriented substantially coaxially with the inner housing. The stationary shaft has an intake opening configured to be intermittently fluidly connected with the intake port.

    Abstract: A compound cycle engine having a rotary internal combustion engine, a first turbine, and a second turbine is discussed. The exhaust port of the internal combustion engine is in fluid communication with the flowpath of the first turbine upstream of its rotor. The rotors of the first turbine and of each rotary unit drive a common load. The inlet of the second turbine is in fluid communication with the flowpath of the first turbine downstream of its rotor. The first turbine is configured as a velocity turbine and the first turbine has a pressure ratio smaller than that of the second turbine. A method of compounding a rotary engine is also discussed.

    Abstract: An engine system is provided, including a housing, multiple shafts in alignment and in parallel with each other, vertically penetrating through the housing, multiple wing sections integratively attached around the multiple shafts, respectively, and configured to engage with each adjacent one to drive axial rotation, and multiple ducts attached to the housing and communicating with inside of the housing, each duct being for use for passing an air-fuel mixture or outputting exhaust gases. The air-fuel mixture is collected in at least two open sections associated with the first wing section, and the collected air-fuel mixture is compressed and ignited for combustion when each of the at least two open sections has a minimum volume. Chemical energy generated by the combustion is used to drive the axial rotation of each wing section, thereby individually rotating the multiple shafts to transmit power.
