The lid is preferably made of a heat insulating material, such as glass, and is dimensioned to fit snugly onto/into the open top of the jar. The single exhaust throughbore in the lid is preferably approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. The lid may be fluted and either transparent or translucent to provide decorative light diffusion.

A stepper motor positions the linear actuator under control of a microprocessor. Changes in valve position permit changes of fuel type and flame intensity.

A method includes the step of extinguishing a flame fired from a burner in a reaction zone upon determining that a sensed combustion chamber temperature is at or above the auto-ignition temperature of a fuel. A subsequent step is performed before the sensed combustion chamber temperature drops below the auto-ignition temperature. The subsequent step provides a flow of the fuel through the burner and into the combustion chamber through a reaction zone outlet. This initiates diffuse combustion of the fuel by auto-ignition in the combustion chamber in the absence of a flame fired from the burner in the reaction zone.

One or more auxiliary plasma torches are provided to a waste processing plant at strategic locations within the chamber and directed towards the waste column. When a bridge forms within the chamber the auxiliary plasma torches may be operated such as to provide an additional heat source where needed, quickly heating the organic solids, which thus pass through the bituminsation and charcoal formation stages quickly. The additional heat source may be in the neighborhood of the bridge, but may also be near the bottom end of the chamber, in which case the additional temperature at the bottom of the chamber effectively moves the combustion and gasification zones for the charcoal to a higher part of the chamber, altering the temperature profile. The heat source also enables the inorganic wastes to be heated rapidly to pass beyond the melting stage relatively quickly. The debridging process may be further enhanced by providing secondary plasma torches at various levels upwards of the primary torches, the secondary torches at any level being operated as and when needed to achieve the desired effect.

The method of the invention concerns operation of a furnace utilizing a hydrogen-rich gas as furnace fuel. The furnace has multiplicity of burners for burning fuel supplied thereto. The method comprises providing ignition means for lighting a flame at at least one burner of the multiplicity of burners. An oxygen-containing gas and a combustible gas comprising a hydrocarbon gas are supplied to each of the multiplicity of burners in amounts capable of forming an ignitable mixture. A flame is ignited at the predetermined one burner which is then allowed to propagate from the at least one predetermined burner to the other burners of the multiplicity of burners. Then the composition of the combustible gas is altered over a period of time so as to replace at least a major part of the hydrocarbon gas by a hydrogen-rich gas until a hydrogen flame is established at each of the multiplicity of burners.

In an apparatus for monitoring a hydrocarbon flame, a plurality of radiation sensors detect electromagnetic radiation emitted by the flame. Each of the sensors is provided with a narrow band filter so that the corresponding sensor is responsive only to a narrow range of wavelengths. In this manner, one of the sensors is made responsive to emissions due to transient species in the flame and one of the sensors is made responsive to emissions from a non-transient species in the combustion region. The signals from the radiation sensors are converted to digital and applied to a central processing unit where they are compared to produce an output indicative of the combustion conditions in the flame. An output unit responds to the output signal from the central processing unit to adjust the air fuel ratio in the flame to a desired level, such as just above stoichiometric.
