A method of processing disks on spin stand is disclosed, the spin stand comprising a spindle motor having a rotor. A first disk is clamped to the rotor, wherein the first disk comprises a reference servo pattern. A second disk is clamped to the rotor, and a first head is servoed over the first disk in response to the reference servo pattern in order to position a second head over the second disk at a first radial location. Data is written to the second disk at the first radial location using the second head. The second disk is removed from the rotor while the first disk remains clamped to the rotor.

An opening is formed in a part of a side wall constructed of the lower plate, the plurality of inner plates, and the upper plate. The recording disk cartridge further includes a lower rotor and an upper rotor supported on inner sides of the lower plate and the upper plate respectively so as to rotate, and a shutter plate having a height corresponding to a height of the stacked recording disk media. The shutter plate is engaged with the upper rotor and the lower rotor so as to open and close the opening.

A disk clamping apparatus for a data storage device fixing at least one disk onto a spindle motor, and having: a clamp combined with the spindle motor and applying pressure onto the disk in a first direction, an outer circumference of the clamp contacting a first part of the disk; and a damper installed between the clamp and the spindle motor to damp impact and vibration delivered to the disk via the clamp. The damper is made of a visco-elastic material and adhered to at least one of a bottom of the clamp or an upper part of the hub. Accordingly, it is possible to damp impacts and vibration delivered to the disk via the clamp, thereby reducing an incidence of the disk bumping against a head, and reducing deterioration of performance of the head.

For a magnetic disk apparatus for reading and writing information to a magnetic disk in the present invention, the recessed portion of the cover of the magnetic disk apparatus has a two-level structure; the space between the inner surface of the recessed portion, corresponding to the region of the magnetic disk surface which the actuator arm does not traverse, and the surface of the magnetic disk is made as narrow as possible. The air flow generated in that space by the rotation of the magnetic disk is thereby suppressed and as a result, magnetic disk resonance is suppressed. Also, the noise level is further suppressed by having two layers of damping plates attached to the outer surface of the cover.

A chucking mechanism which reliably attaches and detaches a disc with high precision is provided. The chucking mechanism includes a shaft for supporting the disc and having a tapered recess, a tapered cone adapted to fit in the tapered recess, and a piston for moving a rod, attached to the tapered cone, through a hole formed in the shaft. The mechanism also includes an O-ring having a variable diameter and being disposed between the tapered cone and the tapered recess. As the piston moves the tapered cone in a first direction, the tapered cone gradually expands the diameter of the O-ring to press and fix the disc. As the piston moves the tapered cone in a second direction, the diameter of the O-ring gradually contracts to move out of contact with the disc so as to release the disc. Since the diameter of the O-ring gradually increases along the tapered portion, the inner peripheral edge of the disc is prevented from being distorted by suddenly being pressed when it is fixed.

An energy absorbing disc travel limiter which not only mechanically defines a limit to the extent to which a disc in a disc drive can be axially displaced in response to applied mechanical shocks, but which also acts to damp the shock-induced motion of the discs, thus preventing contact between the discs and the actuator head mounting arms. The amount of damping provided by the disc travel limiter is determined by selection of the material of the disc travel limiter and selection of certain dimensions of the disc travel limiter.
