Abstract:
The invention relates to embossing multi-ply paper products, for example, paper towels, tissue and napkins, in which an improved embossing arrangement is used which is particularly suitable for paper products which have been processed so as to impart undulations whose axes extend in a principal undulatory direction, typically in the machine direction. The absorbent sheet typically further includes undulations which extend in the cross (transverse direction) of the web such that the absorbent sheet has a biaxially undulatory structure. The undulations may be formed by the use of an undulatory creping blade. Defined parameters accommodate: the distance at which the undulations are spaced, the total surface area of the design (embossing) elements, the width and length of the embossing elements and the aspect ratio of the elements, as well as the angular orientation of the embossing elements with respect to the undulations.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for producing a structured voluminous non-woven fabric, comprising the following steps: producing a spunbonded non-woven fabric consisting of a plurality of monofilaments which are stretched only at 50 to 70% of the maximum possible stretch range to form a fiber skein and subsequent processing the raw non-woven fabric by means of a second pair of rollers (10a, b) with a metal outer jacket to improve the velvet finish. In the second pair of rollers, the positive elements of the positive roller are nops (11) arranged in rows and the surface of the negative roller has lamellas (13) which are arranged in an axial direction and provided with intermediate recesses (14) so that when the rollers roll against each other the lamellas engage in the channels left open by the nops.
Abstract:
The subject matter of the invention is an embossing press, including an embossing roller and a counter cylinder, for producing embossed seams by joining at least two paper layers or fleece layers, arranged one above the other and conveyed in a straight line. For this, the embossed seams extend at a slant or at a right angle relative to the conveying direction of the paper layers or fleece layers. The embossing roller according to the invention is provided with at least two rows of embossing teeth, arranged at a distance to each other, and the counter cylinder is designed as fluted roller, at least in the area effective for the embossing operation. For an equivalent embodiment of the invention, the embossing roller is provided with one row of embossing teeth, for which the total width corresponds at least to the total width of the embossed seams that can be produced during the embossing operation and the counter cylinder is designed as fluted roller, at least in the region of the embossing operation. For this embodiment, the ridged areas in the embossed region are interrupted by at least one groove that matches the non-embossed separating zone desired between the individual embossing seams that can be produced.
Abstract:
Compound webs with improved absorption and pliancy are described. The compound web includes: (a) protrusions in each ply at a frequency greater than 10 protrusions/cm2 and with the surface of the peaks of the protrusions of each ply being greater than 5% of the surface of the ply, and (b) at least one of the plies being embossed in the form of an artistic pattern wherein the distances and the directions of an arbitrary protrusion relative to adjacent protrusions are varied. The pattern is selected in such a manner that at least 25% of the protrusions of the ply take part in effective bonding with the coinciding protrusions of the other ply and the total bonded surface of the protrusion peaks of the ply that take part in bonding is at least 15% of the total surface of the peaks of the protrusion of the ply regardless of the relative positions of the patterns of the two plies.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a process which in a preferred embodiment includes the steps of: (a) applying a hot melt adhesive to a heated roll rotating at an initial tangential speed; (b) milling the adhesive to a reduced thickness and accelerating said adhesive through a series of metering gaps between a plurality of adjacent heated glue rolls; (c) applying the adhesive to a conformable glue application roll rotating at a tangential line speed which is higher than the initial tangential speed; (d) applying the adhesive to a first patterned embossing roll which is engaged with a second patterned embossing roll having a complementary pattern to the first embossing roll, the embossing rolls being heated; (e) passing a web of sheet material between the first and second embossing rolls at the tangential line speed to simultaneously emboss the web and apply the adhesive to the web, such that the adhesive forms an adhesive pattern between embossments; (f) transferring the web from the second embossing roll to the first embossing roll; (g) stripping the web from the first embossing roll; and (h) cooling the web.
Abstract:
A laminate having two or more plies. The plies are embossed, and adhesively joined together. The adhesive forms an essentially continuous network. The essentially continuous network increases the strength of adhesive, increases the strength of the laminate, and is disposed within the X-Y plane of the laminate coincident the embossments.
Abstract:
A process for high pressure embossing a single ply of paper and the paper produced thereby. The embossing process requires two rolls, a pattern roll 30 and an anvil roll 32. The rolls are loaded together at a pressure of at least 1000 psi at the nip. A single ply of paper is embossed in the nip. The embossments of the paper do not extend outwardly beyond the thickness of the paper to have any out-of-plane deformation. The embossments are typically glassined. The resulting paper has an aesthetically pleasing appearance, without undue loss of tensile strength from the embossing process.
Abstract:
A method for impression microengravings, which reproduce holograms, kinetic holograms, or diffraction patterns, directly on paper through an embossing process. Paper is subjected to a humidification step to give it a degree of humidity between 60 and 80% of relative humidity. The humidified paper is then passed through an embossing group, consisting of an embossing cylinder carrying the microengravings and a counterthrust cylinder, at a temperature and a pressure on the paper within the ranges of 90-220.degree. C. and 20-120 kg/mm.sup.2, respectively.
Abstract:
A multiple ply tissue paper structure is disclosed. The paper structure includes a ply comprising discrete relatively low density regions dispersed throughout a relatively high density continuous network. The paper structure also include a ply which does not include discrete relatively low density regions dispersed throughout a relatively high density continuous network. The different structures of the two plies provide improved absorbency over a homogeneous multiple ply structure.
Abstract:
A pre-moistened wet wipe provides functional wet strength in use, yet is dispersible if flushed down the toilet so that plumbing and sewage treatment facilities do not become clogged. A particular embodiment of the wipe consists of three uncreped through-air-dried tissue plies that are attached to each other by edge embossing. The two outer plies contain a wet strength agent to provide wet poke-through resistance to two large, centrally-located unembossed regions. The center ply contains no wet strength agent to aid in dispersibility. The embossing around the edges of the wipe further degrades the strength of the wipe in the embossed areas to assist in dispersibility when the wipe is flushed.
