Abstract: The present invention concerns a method and an apparatus for defrosting frozen wood prior to debarking. The defrosting method of logs of the invention is based on bringing heat zone-specifically to logs in transfer motion on a conveyor according to their heat receiving capacity immediately from the moment of starting of the defrosting, and at the end of the defrosting process, the heat volume per time unit, supplied at a higher temperature, is only a part of the heat volume of the starting phase of the defrosting process. For instance, it is possible to spray water on the wood to be defrosted so that the row interval of the showers in the initial part of the piping is a fraction of the row Interval in the tail end of the piping. In the tall end of the defrosting conveyor steam can also be supplied.

Abstract: A method for selecting random length boards for nesting into a single row of predetermined lengths includes the initial step of arranging a plurality of random length boards on an accumulating rack. A plurality of the boards are then conveyed to channels in an adjacent storage rack. The length of each board is determined as the board is conveyed from the accumulating rack to the storage rack, and this information is transmitted to a central processor. The processor calculates combinations of board lengths in the storage rack which will form a single stock row having a combined board length within a predetermined target range. The processor then selects a preferred combination of boards from the possible combinations, and activates gates in the channels to drop the boards to a conveyor and move the selected boards to a stock row accumulating location. The processor then activates gates on the accumulating rack tracks to convey additional boards to empty channels in the storage rack, and repeats the process. The apparatus includes an accumulating conveyor with longitudinal tracks positioned adjacent a storage rack with longitudinal channels aligned with the tracks. A scanning assembly is positioned between the accumulating conveyor and storage rack for scanning boards moving between the conveyor and storage rack, to determine the length of each board. The central processor is connected to the scanning assembly, and gates on the accumulating rack and storage rack, to automatically operate the system.

Abstract: Log singulating apparatus comprises two sets of interleaved support surfaces which reciprocate in the feed direction. Successive support surfaces are vertically overlapped and laterally offset and the two sets of support surfaces reciprocate out of phase by 180 degrees in relation to one another. Logs are promoted in the feed direction by abutment surfaces associated with each support surface. At the extremes of stroke of the sets of support surfaces, the abutment surfaces of overlapping support surfaces substantially align themselves to allow transfer of the log from one abutment surface to the next. This arrangement applies to each pair of overlapping support surfaces to ensure rapid promotion of the log toward the outfeed.

Abstract: An apparatus for transferring elongated elements from a first location to a laterally disposed second location. The apparatus includes a plurality of transfer members which are pivotally manipulated by operating means in a manner such that an elongated element at the first station is engaged at spaced points along its length by the transfer members and carried along the upper portion of a generally elliptical path to the second location.

Abstract: The invention encompasses apparatus for rendering coplanar the end surfaces of all the pieces of timber in a stack of lumber by placing the stack in near vertical position while subjected to slight lateral constraints, and then dropping (or its equivalent) the stack endwise to a foundation to produce a vertically effective impact upon the stack sufficient to cause the various timbers to move longitudinally relative to each other against the friction between the timbers, thereby to move the lower ends of all the timbers into a common plane. The stack is then returned to a horizontal position in such a manner that the timbers do not move longitudinally relative to each other.
