Abstract:
A dried film reinforced with coalescable water insoluble polymer particles which are substantially noncoalesced is disclosed. Also disclosed are dried films reinforced with noncoalesced water insoluble polymer particles which are readily water dispersible. Also disclosed are stable aqueous dispersions for formation of such films which comprise (a) a water insoluble component comprising coalescable polymer particles which have a T.sub.g less than 55.degree. C. and a majority of which have a particle size of less than 1 micron; and (b) a water soluble component which comprises a water soluble polymer capable of inhibiting coalescence of the polymer particles, or a water soluble polymer and a component capable of inhibiting coalescence of the polymer particles.
Abstract:
Stable, non-gelled, one-package coating compositions capable of being cured at ambient conditions to produce durable coatings comprising at least one polymer and/or oligomer having a molecular weight of at least about 100 and bearing at least two specific aziridine moieties, at least two specific carbodiimide moieties or combinations thereof and at least one polymer and/or oligomer having a molecular weight of at least about 100 and bearing at least two covalently blocked carboxylic acid moieties. Process for coating a substrate using such compositions are also claimed.
Abstract:
A method of producing a cured coating is described comprising the steps of:(A) applying a coating composition on a substrate, wherein the coating composition is a curable coating composition comprising:(1) a polymer comprising functional groups that are reactive with methylol and/or methylalkoxy substituents on the amino nitrogens of an aminoplast curing agent, and(2) an aminoplast curing agent that includes, as substituents on the amino nitrogens:(a) a plurality of methylol and/or methylalkoxy substituents, and(b) one or more substituents that are either nonreactive with the functional groups on the polymer or are reactive with the functional groups at a higher temperature than the temperature at which the methylol and/or methylalkoxy substituents are reactive with the functional groups, and(B) curing the coating at a cure temperature sufficient to react the functional groups on the polymer with the methylol and/or methylalkoxy substituents, but below the temperature for reaction, if any, between the functional groups and the (b) substituents.
Abstract:
Film-forming coating composition for application to a polypropylene substrate, which comprises a polypropylene-adherable polymer P which has a polymer backbone having pendant and/or terminal groups which comprise a moiety of formulae ##STR1## where n is 2 to 500; R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is H or an alkyl or alkenyl group of 1 to 3 carbons, and X is H or halogen and Y is H or halogen. Typically R.sup.1 is methyl, R.sup.2 is H, and X and Y are H. The composition optionally includes a filmogenic polymer Q, different to P.
Abstract:
Water-soluble sulfonium salts are converted, without the elimination of odorous volatile by-products, to water-insoluble products useful as binders in coating formulations by heating a water-soluble cyclic sulfonium salt in which the sulfonium sulfur is bonded only to aliphatic carbons.
Abstract:
A heat-hardenable binder mixture based on organic resins comprises an organic resin having primary and/or secondary and, if appropriate, also additional tertiary amino groups and a crosslinking agent based on an organic compound which contains at least 2 .beta.-hydroxyalkyl ester groups. The binder mixture can additionally contain pigments, fillers, crosslinking catalysts, corrosion inhibitors and other paint auxiliaries. The binder mixture is used in a process for preparing coatings by applying a coating agent in the form of a film to a substrate and subsequently hardening the film by stoving.

Abstract:
Electrodepositable compositions containing small amounts of cellulose acetate butyrate provide coatings having excellent adhesion to the substrate and to conventional topcoat compositions, wherein said cellulose acetate butyrate has a relatively high butyryl content. The electrodepositable compositions are comprised of water dispersible acid or base solubilized synthetic vehicle resins.
