Abstract:
A method for joining nonmetallic pipes underground, with the pipes having mating pairs of bells and spigots, by fitting between mating spigots and bells dry bands of an open celled material (preferably reticulated polyurethane foam) having a dry hydratable cement (preferably portland cement) impregnated therein and engaging each of the bands between one of the bells and its mating spigot. On wetting of the bands, the cement hydrates thereby hardening.
Abstract:
Pipes having dense, watertight concrete walls are produced by vibrating a rotating mould suspended on a roller shaft as the mold is being filled, and continuing its rotation without vibration for a short time after the mold is filled. Vibration is attained by ridges or fingers which can be made effective, or not, to vibrate the mold as it is rotating. In one form, fingers on a roller shaft are slidable between ineffective positions and positions where they serially engage a smooth running surface on the mold. In other forms, a mold is movable from a position where it is supported by engagement of a ridged running surface on either the roller shaft or the mold with a cylindrical surface on the other to a position where the cylindrical surface on the mold runs on the roller shaft or on an auxiliary sleeve without vibration.
Abstract:
A PROCESS HAS BEEN PROVIDED FOR POLYMERIZING DIACETONE ACRYLAMIDE MONOMER AND A COMONOMER SYSTEM BASED ON DIACETONE ACRYLAMIDE MONOMER ONTO A HIGH SURFACE AREA SILICEOUS SUBSTANCE, E,G., KAOLIN CLAY, SILICA, ETC. THIS PROCESS MAY BE CARRIED OUT IN AN AQUEOUS PHASE. THE MONOMERS OR COMONOMERS ARE POLYMERIZED VIA FREE RADICAL POLYMERIZATION ONTO THE SURFACE OF THE SILICEOUS SUBSTANCE. DIACETONE ACRYLAMIDE HOMOPOLYMER MODIFIED SILICEOUS SUBSTANCES POSSESS IMPROVED PROPERTIES. BY EMPLOYING DIACETONE ACRYLAMIDE BUT BY VARYING THE COMPONENT PART OF THE COMONOMER SYSTEM, MODIFIED SILICEOUS SUBSTANCES, SUCH AS CLAYS, ARE OBTAINED WHICH POSSESS ESPECIALLY ADVANTAGEOUS PROPERTIES. MOREOVER, MODIFIED SILICEOUS SUBSTANCES ARE OBTAINED WITH PROPERTIES WHICH MEET SPECIFIED REQUIREMENTS, PRODUCTS PREPARED BY THIS PROCESS ARE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE INVENTION AS ARE THE USES OF THESE SURFACE MODIFIED PRODUCTS FOR PURPOSES AS ADJUVANTS IN POLYMERS, E.G., POLY(ESTER), POLY(VINYL CHLORIDE) AND IN OLEAGINOUS, ALKYD, ADHESIVE, PUTTY, AND GROUTING COMPOSITION FORMULATIONS, TO NAME A FEW.

A PROCESS HAS BEEN PROVIDED FOR MODIFYING WITH AN ORGANIC COMPOUND A HIGH SURFACE AREA SILICEOUS SUBSTANCE. ACCORDING TO THIS PROCESS, THE SILICEOUS SUBSTANCE IS REACTED WITH A CARBODIIMIDE SUCH AS CYCLOHEXYLCARBODIIMIDE. PRODUCTS PREPARED BY THIS PROCESS ARE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE INVENTION AS ARE THE USES OF THESE PRODUCTS FOR PURPOSES AS ADJUVANTS IN POLY(ESTER) AND OLEAGINOUS COMPOSITION FORMULATIONS.
Abstract:
A method for replacing an existing utility pole comprising a proximal section having a bottom end attached to the earth and a distal section having hardware mounted thereon. A principal object is to replace the existing utility pole without disturbing the hardware. A new pole section is attached to the earth. The distal section with the hardware intact thereon is severed from the proximal section. The distal section is then connected to project from the new pole section. The new pole section can have a length different from the proximal section, so that net distance of the hardware from the earth is changed. Preferably the new pole section is made of prestressed concrete and is hollow to accommodate a line therein between the distal section and the earth to provide positive grounding to the earth.
Abstract:
A method of protecting pipes with bell and spigot joints (having metal parts) from corrosion by fitting between the spigot and bell at least one dry band of open celled material (preferably reticulated polyurethane foam) having a particulate alkaline material (preferably Portland cement) impregnated therein and engaging the band between the bell and the spigot. On wetting of the band, the alkaline material is hydrated to protect the metal.
Abstract:
A system of protecting pipes with bell and spigot joints (having metal parts) from corrosion be fitting between the spigot and bell at least one dry band of open celled material (preferably reticulated polyurethane foam) having a hydratable cement (preferably Portland cement) impregnated therein and engaging the band between the bell and the spigot. On wetting of the band, the cement is hydrated to form a water impervious hard sealant in the joint which releases alkalinity to protect the metal.
