摘要: A method for communicating information bidirectionally between a wired network (1) and a wireless network. The wireless network is of the type that includes header stations (12) each having a communication cell (2) associated therewith and one or more mobile communication units (10) disposed within the communication cell. The method includes a first step of, during a first portion of a wireless communication cycle, transmitting information over an uplink wireless communication channel from one or more of the mobile communication units to the header station. A second step of the method, accomplished during a second portion of the wireless communication cycle, transmits information over a downlink wireless communication channel from the header station to one or more of the mobile communication units. The information transmitted downlink includes frames of data received by the header station from the wired network. The first portion may be accomplished in part or in total by a CSMA protocol where the mobile units contend for access to the uplink communication channel. In one embodiment the header station initiates the first portion by transmitting to the header stations information for scheduling the sequence of the uplink transmissions.

摘要: Various embodiments are described to enable multiple, independent communication networks to share in an autonomous and dynamic manner unlicensed wireless resources. Generally, this involves determining that a first network node (122) is using at least a portion of a wireless resource to provide network service to at least one remote unit (102). A second network node (123), under the control of a different network operator than the first node and desiring to use the wireless resource, sends the first network node, a request to relinquish use of at least a portion of the wireless resource. The second network node sends this request wirelessly, perhaps using the wireless resource itself. If the first network node grants the request, the second node may then begin using at least a portion of the relinquished resource to provide network service.

摘要: A satellite communication network (10) coordinates multiple steerable satellite beams (28) with user requests for connections requiring varying bandwidth in real-time. A control station (22) gathers user requests for connections (64) and transmits those requests (70) to a satellite (20) over an uplink (70). Requests for bandwidth (72) are processed in the satellite (20) where time slot assignments (74) and steerable beam schedules (84) are determined in response to user requests (74). Steerable beam schedule (84) and time slot assignments (74) are transmitted to subscriber units (24) and control station (22) over a broadcast downlink (86). Subscriber units (24) complete a data transfer interval of a call (62) while a steerable beam schedule (84) is executed in real-time.

摘要: A central controller (40) executes a method (100) that selects and assigns channels to serve mobile subscriber units (30) in a space-based mobile telecommunication system (10). The method (100) is based on simultaneous consideration of a number of criteria that affect overall system performance of the mobile telecommunication system. Another method (200) assigns serving cells (15-18) by matching the available channel resources with actual caller demand as a function of time. The methods (100, 200) may be used in systems where the actual demand (i.e., offered subscriber traffic) and the number of channels available in each cell (15-18) is varying over time.

摘要: A communications system (20) and method (100) learns and dynamically selects routes among a number of nodes (1-12) based on network state information. Each of the nodes (1-12) monitors its links and determines the state of each of its link. Each of the nodes (1-11) transmits their respective link state information to a designated node called a center node (12) by using forward propagation. After the link state information has been received from all of the nodes (1-11), the center node (12) aggregates them and forms a comprehensive state of the entire network. This network state information is subsequently distributed by the center node (12) to each of the nodes (1-11) in the network using reverse propagation. Each of the node (1-11) uses the network state information in making route selection decisions for connection requests that arrive after the node updates its network state information. The process of learning about network state information is or will be repeated after a predetermined amount of time (or at periodic intervals).

摘要: A Medium Access (MAC) Protocol is utilized for wireless radio access for a plurality of remote stations to a base station on a LAN. There is a time division fixed frame structure in which time is slotted, and time slots are grouped into fixed frames consisting of data and control subframes or periods. The fixed frame structure consists of three periods (A, B, and C) along with their respective headers. The first period, the A period, is used exclusively for data transfer from the base station to the remote stations. The following period, the B period, is used for contention-free data transfer from the remote stations to the base station. The allocation of the data slots in the A and B periods is performed by the base station. The last period of the frame, designated as the C period, is used for the transmission of reservation requests and data from the remote stations to the base station in a random-access contention mode using a slotted Aloha protocol. The duration of the three periods may be varied using a movable boundary technique.

摘要: A wireless communications network includes a local area network connected to a plurality of nodes which perform bidirectional wireless communication with mobile stations as controlled by a controller. Each node has a geographic area, termed a cell, within which mobile stations can communicate with the node associated with the cell. A cell interference graph is read into the controller, and a maximal independent set of nodes is determined. Each node in the maximal independent set of nodes is put in a set termed ACTIVE for performing wireless communication with mobile stations in their respective cells. Nodes which are not in the maximal independent set of nodes is put in a set termed WAITING to wait for permission to enter the set ACTIVE. A node in the set ACTIVE which has completed communications sends a completion signal to the controller. The controller then examines which of the nodes in the set WAITING is not adjacent to another node in the set ACTIVE, and such nodes are entered in a set termed CANDIDATES. Nodes in the set CANDIDATES are moved to the set ACTIVE according to a predetermined criteria.

摘要: A method and apparatus includes a scheduling entity (308) for scheduling and transmitting the superframe (402) across a communication network (200). The controller (310) coupled with scheduling entity (308) groups the subscriber unit (304) into one of the plurality of groups. The scheduler entity (308) assigns a coding scheme for each group and encodes each frame of the superframe (402) based upon the assigned coding scheme for the group, to which the frame is to be transmitted. The transceiver (316) coupled with controller (310) via hardware interface (314) receives the encoded superframe and transmits the superframe to the plurality of subscriber units in the communication network (200).
