Abstract:
An optical switch comprises one or more input ports for directing an optical beam into the switch; dispersive means configured to receive said optical beam and which spatially separate the optical beam into individual wavelength components which are routed to an actuator; wherein the actuator is in the form of an array of elongate movable fingers for selectively interfering with individual wavelength components and means are provided to direct optical beams to selected one or more output ports.
Abstract:
An inductive power transfer system comprises a primary unit 10, having a primary coil 12 and an electrical drive unit 14 which applies electrical drive signals to the primary coil so as to generate an electromagnetic field. The system also comprises at least one secondary device 30, separable from the primary unit and having a secondary coil 32 which couples with the field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit. A control unit 16 causes a circuit including said primary coil to operate, during a measurement period, in an undriven resonating condition. In this condition the application of the drive signals to the primary coil by the electrical drive unit is suspended so that energy stored in the circuit decays over the course of the period. A decay measurement unit 18 takes one or more measures of such energy decay during the measurement period. In dependence upon said one or more energy decay measures, the control unit controls the electrical drive unit so as to restrict or stop inductive power transfer from the primary unit.
Abstract:
An optical element positioning arrangement comprises a reflective optical element, actuators, flexures located between the actuators and said optical element, the arrangement being configured so that when a first actuator is actuated any displacement generated is transmitted via a flexure to said optical element and provided that a second actuator's displacement defers from the displacement of the first, the optical element is caused to swing, characterised in that the actuators are spaced relative to one another and placed substantially parallel to one another.
Abstract:
An antipilferage tag is disclosed which includes a resonant circuit adapted to receive an RF signal and to transmit a response signal when interrogated by said RF signal. The tag includes circuit components constituted by or fabricated from a metallized layer supported by a dielectric material.
Abstract:
A security thread for use in a paper-based value document, such as currency or banknote paper, includes a plastic substrate coated with one or more regions of "soft" magnetic material. A device for verifying both the authenticity and the denomination of the document includes a coil that is driven by an alternating current to thereby provide a uniform magnetic field within a predetermined spatial region. As the document passes in proximity to the drive coil, the applied magnetic field saturates the regions of magnetic material on the security thread. The magnetic regions provide a response magnetic field that, because of the saturation of the magnetic regions, is a non-linear response containing a multiple of frequency components, including a component at the fundamental or drive frequency and various harmonic frequency components. A receive coil senses the response magnetic field. A signal processor connected to the receive coil utilizes the response signals at the fundamental frequency and the low-order harmonic frequencies to determine both the type of magnetic material on the security thread and the denomination of the document from the spatial distribution of the magnetic regions on the security thread.

An electronic article surveillance system for detecting articles carrying or containing magnetically responsive markers is disclosed, which system comprises a transmitting antenna in the form of a large loop of current-carrying material through which the articles are passed, and one or more receiving antenna units, which detect the electromagnetic response of the markers to an interrogating electromagnetic field generated by the transmitting antenna.
Abstract:
An electronic article surveillance system is provided having a transmitter for generating two alternating magnetic fields by way of a single transmitter coil fed with a transmitter signal current, and a receiver that detects harmonics and intermodulation products of the alternating magnetic fields by way of a receiver coil that generates a receiver signal current. The receiver comprises a wide-bandwidth phase detector locked on to a frequency p.f.sub.2 .+-.q.f.sub.1, where p and q are positive integers, one of which may be zero, and a digital signal processor adapted to carry out a full time-domain analysis of the waveform of the receiver signal current, and wherein the transmitter signal current corresponds to the linear super position of two alternative currents with a relatively low frequency f.sub.1 and high frequency f.sub.2 respectively.
