Abstract:
A polyol includes the reaction product of an epoxidized oil and an organic acid. The epoxidized oil and the organic acid are reacted in the presence of a Lewis base catalyst including at least one of a phosphorous atom or a nitrogen atom. The polyol is formed by a method that includes the step of reacting the epoxidized oil with the organic acid in the presence of the Lewis base catalyst.
Abstract:
A method of making a composition comprising reacting, in a reactor, a non-halogenated acetoacetate group containing monomer, at least one additional monomer, and a base, wherein at least a portion of the base is fed to the reactor during reaction. Also, a composition comprising an aqueous polymer dispersion that is a product of a method comprising reacting a non-halogenated acetoacetate moiety containing monomer, at least one additional monomer, and a base, wherein the base is fed to the reaction during reaction, wherein the composition has a lower viscosity than a second composition, wherein the second composition is prepared from the same materials as the composition, and the second composition is made by a method wherein the base is added to the second composition after a reaction to form the second composition.
Abstract:
An aqueous latex coating composition and method of making an aqueous latex coating composition that comprises at least one oligomeric ethylene glycol derivative having the structure RO—(CH2—CH2—O—)n—H, at least one latex polymer, and water, wherein R is H or Cl—C4 alkyl and preferably H, and n is from 3 to 9, preferably from 3 to 8, and more preferably from 3 to 6. The oligomeric ethylene glycol derivative functions as both a coalescing solvent and freeze-thaw stabilizer without contributing to the VOC content of the composition.
Abstract:
The present invention is an aqueous coating composition having excellent freeze-thaw stability and a low-VOC content. The aqueous coating composition of the invention includes at least one latex polymer derived from at least one monomer and at least one polymerizable alkoxylated surfactant, at least one pigment, and water. In accordance with the invention, less than 3.0% by weight of anti-freeze agents based on the total weight of the aqueous coating composition are used in the composition. The present invention also includes a method of preparing an aqueous coating composition such as a latex paint including the above components.

Abstract:
A process for preparing aqueous polymer dispersions comprises first of all subjecting ethylenically unsaturated monomers to free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization to prepare an aqueous dispersion of a polymer 1 having a glass transition temperature Tg1, then dissolving further, comparatively hard monomers in the dispersed particles of the polymer 1, and subsequently carrying out free-radical polymerization of said monomers dissolved in said particles.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to aqueous formulations comprising: i. at least one hydrophilic particulate polymer P1, as an aqueous dispersion, composed essentially of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers having a water-solubility in the range from 10 to 100 g/l (at 25° C. and 1 bar), and ii. at least one hydrophobic particulate polymer P2, as an aqueous dispersion, composed essentially of ethylenically unsaturated monomers having a water-solubility below 10 g/l (at 25° C. and 1 bar), the glass transition temperature Tg1 of the polymer P1 being less than 10 K different from the glass transition temperature Tg2 of the polymer P2.
Abstract:
