Abstract: A diesel engine includes a cylinder block having a cylinder cavity defined therein. A cylinder head is coupled to the cylinder block and includes a lower semi-hemispherical surface defined thereon that defines an upper boundary of a combustion chamber. The engine includes a piston slideably disposed within the cylinder cavity that includes a piston crown having an upper surface configured to define a first portion of a lower boundary of the combustion chamber. The upper surface of the piston crown includes an axi-symmetric semi-hemispherical shape configured to correspond to the lower semi-hemispherical surface of the cylinder head.

Abstract: A cylinder head includes novel designs for undercuts, contours of the outer enclosure, coolant jackets, and other cavities within an outer enclosure of the cylinder head. The cylinder head design enables the reduction of weight of the head while maintaining structural integrity of the head, and improves control of temperatures in intake side and exhaust side zones of the heads to improve operational efficiency of the engine. A method is provided for additive manufacturing of the cylinder head including the disclosed designs.

Abstract: For a given cylinder in the engine having two intake valves and two exhaust valves, one of the intake valves is driven by a bucket tappet, while the other intake valve is actuated via a roller finger follower. Similarly, one of the exhaust valves is driven by a bucket tappet, while the other exhaust valve is actuated via a roller finger follower. The intake valves read inputs form an intake camshaft, and the exhaust valves read inputs from an exhaust camshaft.
