    Abstract: A downflow sand filter used for treating wastewater which has degraded in function from its original design is at least in part rejuvenated by flowing air downwardly through the bed during time when flow of wastewater is ceased. The low velocity air flow helps dewater the bed and leads to the removal of accumulated organic material which has clogged the pores of the bed. In accord with different embodiments, air flow is alternated with water flow in particular ways, for instance, so the water flow is sufficient to create ponding or is sufficient to maintain moisture content within the bed.

    Abstract: A leach field of a sewage system is dewatered, to restore its function when it is at or near failure. In various embodiments, water is withdrawn from the points in the leach field, preferably from the conduits, by means of suction or sub-atmospheric pressure. As water is drawn from the soil, air from the atmosphere or from an air mover enters resultant spaces in the soil, to restore the influence zone and better treat waste water. Forced air flow is used to fissure the soil, to aid dewatering, and separately, to restore the leach field.

    Abstract: Applied loads to the soil or material directly above the water treatment system components may be managed in embodiments so as to not exceed a maximum value similar to that imposed by walking, riding mowers, pedestrian traffic, or other lower load values. Managing the applied loads to soil or other material above a water infiltration field or other water treatment component serve to reduce or eliminate soil compaction and thereby maintain air flow through the soil and to and from the underlying water treatment system components. When footers are used and located outside of the water treatment system components, the imposed soil loads may be higher as soil compaction in areas not above the water treatment system may not be needed for proper air flow to and from the infiltration field or other water treatment system component. When slab-on-grade type configurations are used, the imposed soil loads may be managed above the water treatment components so as to have minimal soil compaction to maintain proper air flow to and from the infiltration field or other water treatment system component.

    Abstract: Devices, processes, systems, and articles of manufacture adapted to treat contaminated fluid, such as organic wastewater, are described. These are described to include lifting contaminated fluids, treating contaminated fluids, or both, through gas application. In certain designs, gas, such as pressurized air, may be used to lift contaminated fluids, such as organic wastewater (i.e., water having contaminating organics of some kind, e.g. residential septic wastewater). In certain designs, gas, such as pressurized air, may also be used to treat fluids interfacing with the gas.
