In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of inducing germination of microbial spores including contacting the microbial spores with a p-phenylene ethynylene compound. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method for detecting an enzyme, a method of protein analysis, or a method of detecting a chemical agent, including introducing a p-phenylene ethylylene compound to a composition including an enzyme substrate, and analyzing the fluorescence of the p-phenylene ethynylene compound. Various embodiments provide sensors that include a p-phenylene ethynylene compound and an enzyme substrate.

    摘要: The present disclosure provides rapid, simple, robust and sensitive label and label-free assays for use in drug discovery, bioagent detection and medical diagnostics as well as means for reading such assays. The assays disclosed in the present disclosure use the formation, disruption and destruction of self-assembling fluorescent dye:biopolymer complexes to indicate the presence or absence of an analyte of interest. Such assays are suitable for high throughput screening and can achieve high sensitivity due to the enhanced fluorescence and changes of absorption spectra of certain dyes, particularly cyanine dyes, when they bind to specific biopolymers.

    摘要: A chemical composition including a moiety comprising a quencher (Q), a tethering element (T), and a ligand (L) that associates with and quenches a fluorescent polymer is disclosed. When an analyte sample is introduced, the ligand (L) binds to a target biological agent if it is present, thereby causing the QTL molecule to separate from the fluorescent polymer resulting in an increase in detected fluorescence. The same chemistry is advantageously employed in a competitive assay. An electric field can also be applied to separate the QTL molecule from the fluorescent polymer. A method for detecting targets for these methods are also disclosed.

    摘要: The invention relates to compositions including a charged oligo-phenylene ethynylene singlet-oxygen sensitizer and an oppositely-charged surfactant, which show an enhanced biocidal activity relative to a comparable concentration of the oligo-phenylene ethynylene without the oppositely-charged surfactant. The enhancement of biocidal activity is observed with an anionic oligo-phenylene ethynylene in the presence of a cationic surfactant such as TTAB, and with a cationic oligo-phenylene ethynylene in the presence of an anionic surfactant such as SDS.
