The present invention relates to a method for repairing turbine engine components, such as vanes and blades, which have airfoils. The method broadly comprises removing oxidation debris from portions of the component by blending areas exhibiting thermal barrier coating spall and/or oxidation damage, removing a ceramic insulating layer from the component, and blending surfaces of the component where nicks, dents, and/or cracks are located. If the component has a depleted aluminum zone, the depleted zone is either removed or replenished. Further, a tip portion of the component, if damaged, is restored and tip abrasives are applied to restore the component's cutting ability. Thereafter, a ceramic coating is applied to the component.

Compositional requirements and processing improvements are disclosed which improve the hydrogen embrittlement resistance and the fatigue resistance in air of nickel base single crystal articles. The compositional requirements enlarge the difference between the &ggr;′ solvus temperature and the incipient melting temperature, thus enabling the solution of &ggr;/&ggr;′ eutectic islands without causing incipient melting, while hot isostatic pressing and careful melt practice eliminate porosity and carbides, borides and nitrides, all of which act as crack initiation sites.

A process for forming a coated substrate comprises providing a nickel base alloy substrate, depositing a chromium coating onto the nickel base alloy substrate and diffusing chromium from said coating into the substrate, applying a MCrAlY coating onto the nickel base alloy substrate and heat treating the substrate with the deposited chromium and the MCrAlY coating so that chromium diffuses into an outer region of the substrate. Further, in accordance with the present invention, a strip process for removing a coating from a substrate broadly comprises the steps of providing a nickel base alloy substrate having chromium diffused into an outer region and a MCrAlY coating deposited over the substrate with the diffused chromium and removing the MCrAlY coating by immersing the nickel base alloy substrate in an acid solution containing a sulfuric acid—hydrochloric acid mixture in water.

A high modulus component, such as an aircraft engine turbine blade, is formed from a base metal that has a high modulus crystallographic orientation that is aligned with the primary, i.e. radial, direction of the turbine blade. The base metal is Ni, Fe, Ti, Co, Al, Nb, or Mo based alloy. Alignment of a high modulus direction of the base metal with the primary direction provides enhanced high cycle fatigue life.
