Abstract: A self-propelled center pivot irrigation system has individual span units each one of which has at least one or more fluid conduits, and at least one or more power frames for propelling the span unit, each power frame has at least one or more drive wheels, a drive motor, and transmission means connecting the drive motor to the drive wheels to transmit power from the drive motor to the drive wheels, the transmission means has an input drive gear, intermediate planetary gear speed reduction means and an output shaft for connection between the drive motor output shaft and the power frame drive wheels to provide a low friction, speed reducing, torque increasing drive for the power frame drive wheels from the drive motor.

Abstract: An automatic irrigation controller apparatus having a cam follower operated bank of pilot valves for operating selected pilot operated water valves throughout a watering or irrigation system is provided with a water powered means for receiving water under pressure from a source thereof and a member driven in a predetermined manner by the force of such water for driving a cam means to operate said cam followers via power transmission means between the water driven member and a cam shaft mounting said cam. A water piston is mounted in a cylinder with associated water valve means for selectively connecting the cylinder to a source of water under pressure and to a vent to provide a reciprocal movement for the piston, a return stroke for the piston being accomplished through the provision of a spring. A reciprocal piston movement is translated through a power transmission means including a drive ratchet wheel connected to the piston and a driven ratchet wheel connected to the cam shaft. An escapement mechanism is provided with a ring gear mounted about an engagement with a plurality of planetary gears mounted by a carrier about a sun gear driven by an input shaft of the apparatus connected to the cam shaft. Differences in the speed of rotation of the input shaft and the escapement means ring gear cause movement of the carrier which is connected to a valve restricting means for restricting the flow of water to the cylinder to regulate the speed of the water motor and rotation of the apparatus input shaft to that determined by the escapement mechanism.

Abstract: A reversible turbine driven sprinkler unit includes a sprinkler head incorporating a nozzle that is continuously driven by a reversible turbine which continuously oscillates the head between selectable reversing stops for covering a selected part of a circle. A water turbine which is driven by the water supply to the nozzle includes a reversible stator for alternating the direction of rotation of the turbine which is drivingly connected through a gear train to the sprinkler head. A reversing mechanism includes a shifting shaft extending axially from the turbine stator through the turbine, the drive train and the sprinkler head terminating in a cylindrical cavity formed in the top of the sprinkler head in which it is positioned, in an adjustable position, reversing stops for alternately engaging a reversing arm mounted on the shifting shaft for shifting the stator of the turbine to its selected alternate positions. A flow interrupter is intermittently driven in one direction by the oscillation of the sprinkler head to change its position in front of the nozzle for intermittently interrupting the flow of water from the nozzle.

Abstract: An improved check valve for a backflow preventing valve of the type having an inlet passage, an intermediate chamber, and an outlet passage, includes a stationary valve port fluidly communicating with the intermediate chamber, a movable contoured valve seat for sealing the port, and a valve closing apparatus in rolling engagement with the valve seat and responsive to the pressure differential thereacross. The valve closing apparatus urges the valve seat to a valve closed position and includes a stationary shaft, a pair of rollers, and a spring. The spring biases the rollers against the contoured valve seat to thereby effect the closure of the seat member against the valve port. An improved exhaust valve is also provided and includes a balanced valve member providing a path between the intermediate chamber and the atmosphere when in a valve open position. The balanced valve member is resiliently biased between a valve seat and a moveable diaphragm. The diaphragm compares the inlet passage and intermediate chamber pressures and maintains the valve closed when the inlet passage pressure is greater than the intermediate chamber pressure, while moving to absorb fluid displacements from the intermediate chamber caused by large reductions in the inlet passage pressure.

The sprinkler includes a novel, resiliently expandable reservoir construction for accumulating relatively large volume, intermittent bursts, and a drive system which also provides relatively short range, continual irrigation. Separate sprinkler units can be used on a field concurrently, or a single unit can be moved over successive areas of a field until the whole field has been covered.
