    摘要: A method of determining side track erasure in a disk drive having a disk and a transducer. A target track and one or more side tracks proximate to the target track on the disk are selected, and recording parameters for recording signals on the target track and each side track with the transducer are selected. Thereafter, signals are recorded on each side track and then signals are recorded on the target track multiple times. A reduction in the integrity of the recorded signals on each side track due to recording signals on the target track multiple times is detected, and the detected reduction in the integrity of the recorded signals on each side track represents the amount of the erasure of the recorded signals on the side track. Recording parameters are changed based on the signal integrity reduction to minimize side track erasure.

    摘要: A novel method and apparatus is provided for printing magnetic patterns using heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). The apparatus includes an array of probes that is arranged in a predetermined pattern, such as a servo pattern. The array of probes is brought into contact, or near-contact, with a magnetic recording medium that has been bulk erased substantially along an initialization direction. Each probe is energized so as to heat its respective contacted (or near-contacted) region of the recording medium above a threshold temperature. An external magnetic field is applied to the heated regions in a direction that is substantially opposite from the initialization direction. The strength of the external magnetic field is chosen to be greater than the coercivity of the recording medium at the threshold temperature, but less than the coercivity of the recording medium at room temperature. As a result, only magnetizations in the heated regions become aligned with the external field.

    摘要: A TAMR (Thermal Assisted Magnetic Recording) write head uses the energy of optical-laser generated plasmons in a magnetic core plasmon antenna to locally heat a magnetic recording medium and reduce its coercivity and magnetic anisotropy. To enable the TAMR head to operate most effectively, the maximum gradient and value of the magnetic recording field should be at a point of the magnetic medium that is as close as possible to the point being heated. In addition, the coupling between the optical mode and the plasmon mode should be efficient so that maximum energy is transmitted to the medium. The present invention achieves both these objects by surrounding the magnetic core of a plasmon antenna by a variable thickness plasmon generating layer, whose thinnest and shortest portion is at the ABS end of the TAMR head and whose thickest and longest portion efficiently couples to the optical mode of a waveguide to produce a plasmon.
