    Abstract: A user-centric driving-support system for implementation at a vehicle of transportation. The system in various embodiments includes one or more vehicle sensors, such as a camera, a RADAR, and a LiDAR, and a hardware-based processing unit. The system further includes a non-transitory computer-readable storage device including an activity unit and an output-structuring unit. The activity unit, when executed by the hardware-based processing unit, determines, based on contextual input information, at least one of an alert-assessment output and a scene-awareness output, wherein the contextual input information includes output of the vehicle sensor. The output-structuring unit, when executed by the hardware-based processing unit, determines an action to be performed at the vehicle based on at least one of the alert-assessment output and the scene-awareness output determined by the activity unit. The technology in various implementations includes the storage device, alone, and user-centric driving-support processes performed using the device and other vehicle components.

    Abstract: A system and method for resolving a first target from a second target by radar is disclosed. The system includes a transmitter for transmitting a source signal, a receiver for receiving first and second echo signals from reflection of the source signal from at least a first target and a second target, respectively. A processor is used to subtract the first echo signal from the composite signal to obtain a second generation of the second echo signal, subtract the second generation of the second echo signal from the composite signal to obtain a second generation of the first echo signal, and estimate a parameter value for the first target from the second generation of the first echo signal and a parameter value for the second target from the second generation of the second echo signal.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for optimizing an angular resolution across a field-of view for an antenna array having a plurality of antenna elements positioned along a curved surface. The method includes selecting a position along the curved surface for a first antenna element in the plurality of antenna elements and calculating subsequent positions for each of the remaining plurality of antenna elements on the antenna array, wherein the subsequent positions are determined relative to the position of the first antenna element and wherein the subsequent positions represent positions at which a maximum angular resolution is achieved for all angles in the field-of-view.

    Abstract: A spatial cognitive radar system, method of assembling the radar, and method of selecting antenna elements in the radar are described. The system includes a phased array of a plurality of antenna elements and a plurality of receiver channels, the plurality of receiver channels being a value greater than one and less than a number of the plurality of antenna elements. The system also includes a processor to determine a subset of the plurality of antenna elements, equal in number to the plurality of receiver channels, to be used in transmitting or receiving with the spatial cognitive radar system.

    Abstract: A detection system to detect an object and a method of performing detection of an object are described. The system includes a radar system to transmit radiation and receive resulting reflections, the object being a distributed radar target reflecting multi-point reflections. The system also includes an auxiliary sensor to estimate one or more parameters of the object, and a processor to estimate a probability density function based on estimates of the one or more parameters of the object and the multi-point reflections and to detect the object based on the probability density function.

    Abstract: A method of synchronizing a plurality of spatially distributed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar systems includes designating one of the plurality of MIMO radar systems that includes a linear frequency modulator as a master MIMO radar system, and designating each of the other plurality of MIMO radar systems as slave MIMO radar systems. Each of the slave MIMO radar systems receives an output of the linear frequency modulator. A synchronization signal is sent from the linear frequency modulator through the modulator splitter to each of the slave MIMO radar systems over respective cables, and a return signal is sent from each of the slave MIMO radar systems to the master MIMO radar system over the respective cables. A time delay is determined between the master MIMO radar system and each of the slave MIMO radar systems based on a frequency difference between the synchronization signal and the respective return signal.
