    Abstract: System and methods for performing look-ahead and look-around (LALA) inversion are provided. Measurements of formation properties accumulated by a downhole LALA tool are obtained during different stages of drilling a wellbore through layers of an underground formation. A distribution of formation properties measured for the layers behind a current layer is determined. A formation model for look-ahead inversion is defined based on the determined distribution of formation properties behind the current layer. Measurements of the current layer's formation properties collected by the downhole LALA tool are obtained. A distribution of formation properties for one or more layers ahead of the current layer is estimated based on the formation model and the measurements of formation properties obtained for the current layer. The estimated distribution includes a gradient transition of formation properties between the current layer and the one or more layers ahead of the current layer.

    Abstract: A stochastic control method includes determining a property of a solid present in a drilling fluid circulating within a mud circulation system and identifying a mud circulation model that dictates operation of the mud circulation system. The mud circulation model is based on one or more models of one or more uncertainties encountered during a wellbore drilling operation. The method further includes determining an accuracy of the mud circulation model based on a difference between the determined property of the solid present in the drilling fluid and a solid property of the drilling fluid as provided by the mud circulation model, and programming a controller of the mud circulation system based on the mud circulation model to modify operation of the mud circulation system.

    Abstract: A disclosed drilling system includes a drill string assembly having subsystem inputs that control ROP and other performance parameters; and a processing system that provides automated uncertainty mitigation of a model for controlling the subsystem inputs. The drilling string assembly may include a BHA subsystem and a drill string that connects the BHA to a drilling rig subsystem and a fluid circulation subsystem. The processing system operates by: obtaining a drilling system model having interaction states representing how each subsystem input impacts the subsystem; characterizing an uncertainty for each interaction state; evaluating an influence of each interaction state's uncertainty on the performance parameters; calculating a net benefit for mitigating said model uncertainties; automatically mitigating said one or more model uncertainties when the net benefit exceeds a threshold, thereby improving the model of the drilling system; and controlling the subsystem inputs based on the model.
