Abstract: A holder for food, drink and utensils includes a flat oval-shaped platform having a central food supporting portion and an upturned peripheral retaining lip, and a pair of cup-shaped recessed compartments connected to and extending below the platform. The compartments are spaced from one another at opposite ends of the platform. One recessed compartment is a beverage container compartment and the other is a utensil compartment. A third recessed compartment can be provided as an option to hold a party dip. The container compartment is larger in diameter than the utensil compartment. The dip compartment is preferably oblong in shape and of a shallower depth than the other two which are equal in depth. The container and utensil compartments make the holder capable of standing by itself in an upright fashion. Further, the two compartments are spaced apart sufficiently to allow insertion of a person's hand between them and then cupping of the hand for gripping the exterior of the container compartment to hold and position the holder with the central platform portion resting on top of the cupped hand and the exterior of the utensil compartment contacting the back of the cupped hand. Also, the compartments each have a tapered configuration which allows stacking of holders with their corresponding compartments in nested relationship with one another.

Abstract: A novel device and method for determining the contrast sensitivity of a subject is provided and comprises a test chart including a plurality of patches systematically organized in a predetermined array, each patch having a plurality of adjacent patterned areas, at least one of which is a pattern of alternate light and dark regions of predetermined contrast, and the remaining patterned areas are solid gray patterns of predetermined reflectance, each contrast pattern being characterized by a space average reflectance equal to the predetermined reflectance value of the adjacent gray patterned areas. The spatial frequency and contrast of the alternate dark and light regions may be varied in the array of patches. In the method for determining the visual contrast sensitivity of the vision system of a subject, a chart of the invention is displayed to the subject at successively shorter distances, and the greatest distance at which the subject can resolve each contrast pattern is determined and recorded.

Abstract: An improved system for measuring absolute angular deviation through transparencies, such as aircraft windscreens, uses an incoherent light source and a target configuration in the form of an opaque slide with a transparent "L"-shaped pattern. The positions of images of the legs of the "L" passed through the transparency are detected by CCD arrays for measurement of the azimuth and elevation components of angular deviation for each tested point on the transparency, uncontaminated by lateral displacement errors.

Abstract: An apparatus for detecting contact between an object and the surface of a body, by utilizing various indices of refraction so that electromagnetic energy reaches a detector system only when there is optical contact. A body of transmissive material is irradiated with electromagnetic energy. That portion of the energy which enters the body through a first boundary surface is refracted, thereby striking the body surface leading to the detection system at angles of incidence sufficient to cause total reflection at that surface. Similarly, electromagnetic energy which passes through the body, strikes the object on the opposite side, and reenters the body is refracted upon reentry and totally reflected at the surface leading to the detector system. Contact between the object and the contact detecting surface produces diffusive reflection within the body at all points of actual contact. The incidence angle between the diffusive electromagnetic energy at each point of contact and the surface leading to the detection system is sufficiently low to permit passage of electromagnetic energy outward through surface and onto the detection system. Since the contact points and the detection system are geometrically related, contact locations or patterns may be recognized when they are being sought.

Abstract: An adaptor detachably mounted on an ocular of night vision goggles for quly adjusting the objective lens focus to clearly view far and near objects. The adaptor includes a positive optical power or close-up lens mounted in a holder pivotally mounted between a stowed, inoperative position and an operative position locating the close-up lens in axial alignment with the objective lens of the ocular. The close-up lens has an effective diameter substantially smaller than the diameter of the objective lens to raise the F/number of the objective lens/close-up lens combination for increasing the depth of focus for enhanced near viewing. Auxiliary illumination is provided by a battery powered infra-red Light Emitting Diode (LED) mounted in the adaptor and energized by a switch as the lens holder moves toward its operative position.

Abstract: A synthetic color arrangement for a night vision inclusive surveillance system and its display is disclosed. The system partitions an input scene video signal into spectrally segregated scene components which are provided with separate processing as video signals and then recombined into a composite but now multiple color inclusive output representation of the input scene. The system in effect shifts input spectral components to a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum, the visible range of the spectrum, where operator controllable new spectral wavelength values are assigned to each different input scene spectral wavelength. Use of charge coupled device video camera elements, a video signal mixer apparatus, input wavelengths within both the visible and infrared spectral regions and signal processing according to the NTSC standards are also included. Military and non military uses of the apparatus are contemplated.
