Abstract:
In one embodiment, a device for collecting and absorbing drips on an exterior of a fluid container comprises a band of absorbent material placed around the neck of the fluid container. A capsule covers the neck of the container, including the absorbent material. When the container is prepared for use, the capsule is removed, thereby exposing the absorbent material. In another embodiment, absorbent material is applied to the inside of the capsule. When the container is prepared for use, a portion of the skirt of the capsule is left in place on the neck of the fluid container to collect and absorb drips.
Abstract:
The method and apparatus identifies selected broadcast segments, such as commercial advertisements, of a television signal in real-time for the purpose of muting the video and audio portions of the television signal during each unwanted segment. A signature pattern associated with each segment of the television signal is detected and compared to stored signature patterns representative of selected segments such as commercial advertisement segments. If the signature pattern matches one of the stored signature patterns, the segment is thereby immediately identified as being one of the selected segments and is processed in real-time to mute the audio and video portions of the television signal during the segment. If the signature pattern of the segment does not match any of the stored signature patterns, the segment is analyzed to determine whether the segment is nevertheless a selected segment and, if so, its signature pattern is stored along with the stored signature patterns. The analysis to determine whether the segment is nevertheless a selected segment is performed by detecting the length of the segment upon its completion and then determining whether the length of the segment matches one of a pre-determined set of permissible selected segment lengths such as standard commercial advertisement segment lengths of 15 seconds, 30 seconds, or 60 seconds. If so, the segment is identified as being a selected segment and its signature pattern is stored along with the other stored signature patterns such that, the next time the same segment is encountered, its signature will then match the stored signature and therefore the segment can be immediately identified and muted in real-time.

A system delivers information relating to a time sequence of events, either factual or fictional. A set of reports about the events is stored in a data storage device, each report containing information relating to a specific period of time, such as a day, a week, a month, etc. The period of time covered by each report is contiguous with that of another report in the set. A subset of the reports is retrieved from the data storage device and transferred to a user's computer memory. When accessed by the user, the information contained in the subset of reports is presented in accordance with a predetermined temporal relationship between real time and the span of time depicted in the set of reports. The user can access reports corresponding to earlier periods of time, but cannot access reports relating to later periods of time. The user's experience thereby simulates the experience of witnessing the events as they unfold in real time.

A variety of function control elements in the form of keys are provided to the consumer who selects a desired set of the control elements. Each of the control elements has a unique pattern of projections molded into the bottom surface. These projections are in operative alignment with an array of membrane switches disposed on a switching substrate within the control device. The control device includes a front panel that is perforated with a pattern of slots. Each of the control elements has a pair of projecting tabs that look the element onto the control panel so that it is securely retained thereon, but may be released if desired. The projections on the bottom of the element extend through the slots in the front panel to the switching substrate below. The particular pattern of projections is unique to each control element and the corresponding pattern of switch contacts closed upon actuation of the control element determines the function that is performed.

Abstract:
An automatic editing device is coupled between a conventional VCR and a conventional television monitor/receiver. During recording of a television signal, data is accumulated with respect to the time of occurrence and duration of detectable events, such as blank frames, in the television signal, and such data is stored in the device. At a time subsequent to the recording process, the stored data is analyzed to classify the content of the television signal between the detectable events. The recording is made on a tape which has timing reference data permanently encoded thereon. During playback, the stored data for each event is compared to the timing reference data read from the tape and the VCR is automatically commanded into a fast scan mode when the tape reaches the beginning time of a portion of the video signal that has been classified for elimination during playback. The VCR is then automatically commanded to return to the normal "play" mode when the tape reaches the ending time of that portion of the video signal. Since all of the television signal is recorded on the tape, any or all of the signal may be viewed, even if portions of it have been misclassified.
