A splice tray for use in splicing fiber optic cables has an outer periphery and a cable splicing area inwardly of the outer periphery. A main cable guideway for receiving a pair of side-by-side cables to be spliced extends along a portion of the outer periphery adjacent thereto. The main cable guideway splits into first and second continuation guideways, the first of which curves inwardly from the outer periphery to intersection with the splicing area from one direction. The second continuation guideway continues along another portion of the outer periphery to intersection with the splicing area from another direction. The two fiber optic cables that extend along the main guideway are separated to extend through the first and second continuation guideways to the splicing area for being joined together in a splice. A cable looping device is provided in the splicing area for receiving cable loops to take up slack, and a splice receiving recess is provided in the splice area for holding a splice. A housing for the splice tray includes a vertical case having a door hinged to the bottom portion thereof for swinging movement about a horizontal hinge axis between a vertical closed position and a horizontal open position. The splice tray is attached to the inside of the door for receiving a pair of cables that extend from the case and across the hinge to the splice tray. An integral inclined guideway extension on the splice tray extends toward the hinge axis along an inclined door bottom wall for receiving the cables.

The present invention is a block oriented control system that allows interoperability between devices made by different manufacturers. A block oriented control system is a system which includes a plurality of field devices incorporating a physical layer, communication stack, and user layer, with the field devices being connected by a transmission medium, such as a bus. The physical layer receives signals from the bus and translates the signals into a message for the communications stack, and receives messages from the communications stack and translates the messages into signals for the bus. The communication stack controls the communications between devices operating in the control system. The user layer is a block oriented approach to the system's control functions, and includes function blocks and system management. The function blocks are standardized encapsulations of control functions, such as analog input or proportional/derivative. The system management allows synchronization of the device applications and the network processing.

An operator interface within a process plant includes an execution engine that implements process flow modules made up of interconnected smart process objects that are aware of devices and other entities within the plant and that can perform methods to detect conditions within the plant, especially on a system-level basis. The smart process objects include a display element to be displayed to the operator, data storage for storing data pertaining to and/or received from an associated entity within a plant, inputs and outputs for communicating with other smart process objects and methods that may be executed on the stored and received data to detect plant conditions, including system-level conditions, such as leaks, errors and other conditions. Process flow modules, which may be made up of numerous interconnected smart process objects, may also include flow algorithms associated therewith to calculate mass balances, flows, etc. for the process elements within the process flow modules.

A method or apparatus automatically configures a control module for synchronous execution on a Fieldbus segment of a process control network by determining if all of the critical function blocks of a particular control module can be assigned to FOUNDATION® Fieldbus field devices or to the I/O device associated with a particular Fieldbus segment. If so, the method or apparatus automatically assigns the function blocks of the control module, which would otherwise be scheduled to execute in a controller, to the I/O device for the Fieldbus segment. This technique enables all of the critical or necessary function blocks within the control module to execute in one macrocycle of the Fieldbus segment, thereby executing synchronously on a Fieldbus segment. This operation, in turn, increases the overall execution rate of the control module with respect to control modules that have function blocks split between a controller and field devices on a Fieldbus segment, which has been the traditional manner of configuring control modules implemented using devices on a Fieldbus segment.

A dual mode configurator operates in an off-line mode to configure Fieldbus devices and/or segments in a typical manner and operates in an on-line mode to reconfigure or set certain parameters of a device when the device is connected to a segment controlled by a different host, without interfering with the on-line operation of the segment. The dual mode configurator can be used to configure an entire segment by configuring both network settings and device settings and, alternatively, can be used to configure device settings without effecting or interfering with the on-line system configuration information such as the network settings of a segment when, for example, a different host device or configuration device is connected to the segment to implement process control activities or to make segment changes.

A system and method for creating a fieldbus configuration on a computer system. The user assembles a graphical program or wiring diagram on the screen which comprises a selected plurality of function block icons which are linked with one or more wires connecting the function block icons. As the user assembles the fieldbus configuration wiring diagram, the system automatically creates and displays a schedule which visually presents the schedule being created. The schedule comprises one or more schedule bars for graphically or visually indicating the order of execution of the function blocks. The user can change the order of execution indicated by the schedule by graphically manipulating the schedule bars in the schedule. The user can also place one or more loop structures in the editor window which encapsulate a group of function block icons. The loop structure is used to specify a rate for the function block icons comprised within the loop structure.

A system and method for displaying and configuring parameters in a fieldbus configuration system. The fieldbus configuration utility first determines the devices and blocks present in the system, and then determines the parameters of each block. When the parameters are displayed, an object is displayed proximate to certain of the parameters. The object includes a color and/or shape which indicates the type or class of parameter. The user can also configure alarms and trends using the improved graphical interface of the present invention. The user configures alarms and trends by assembling a graphical program or wiring diagram on the screen which comprises a selected one or more block icons and an icon representing the device receiving the trend or alarm. The system also includes a periodic update window which is used to obtain periodically updated values of selected parameters.

A system and method for accessing parameters or objects using a tag parameter interface in a fieldbus system. The present invention enables access to parameters or objects using the tag parameter construct without requiring the user to perform any pre-configuration of connections or name to index mappings. This considerably simplifies user development of applications in a fieldbus network, wherein the user is completely shielded from all Fieldbus Foundation protocol details. According to the present invention, the user is not required to have any knowledge about the details of the VCR, how to set up or establish the VCR, or even that an entity called "VCR" exists in the system. Also, the present invention automatically maps the parameter name to an index, and thus the user is shielded from the details of construction of the device. Also, if a new function block is instantiated or an existing function block is de-instantiated, the method of the present invention handles the configuration management without requiring any user involvement.

A method for accessing data on a fieldbus device in a fieldbus network which comprises user selectable models of data ownership. The fieldbus device includes a user application executing on the fieldbus device and a function block shell executing on the fieldbus device. The method comprises receiving a request to access data on a fieldbus device. In response to the request, the function block shell determines the ownership attribute of the data, wherein possible ownership attributes include user owned or shell owned. The shell accesses the data in response to determining that the ownership attribute of the data is shell owned. The user application accesses the data in response to determining that the ownership attribute of the data is user owned. The method further includes shell notify and user pointer ownership models which provide additional flexibility.
