摘要:
A scanning device for reading indicia of differing light reflectivity, including bar code or matrix array symbols, has a single light emitter, such as a laser or light emitting diode, for generating a scanning light beam to visually illuminate sequential portions of the indicia. A sensor, such as a charge coupled or other solid state imaging device, simultaneously detects light reflected from portions of the indicia and generates an electrical signal representative of the spacial intensity variations the portions of the indicia. The scanning device may also include an ambient light sensor, and a second light emitter for use only in aiming or orienting the scanning device. A photodetector may also be provided to separately detect one symbol virtually simultaneous with the detection of another symbol by the sensor or to provide dual modalities. A method for reading indicia is also provided.

A bar code scanner and method for scanning a bar code symbol that splits a light beam using a liquid crystal device and directs the split light beams toward a bar code symbol using a moveable mirror. The light reflected by the symbol from each of the split light beams is summed and converted to an electrical signal indicative of the bar code symbol. The electrical signal is processed to decode the bar code symbol, but, if decoding is unsuccessful, the liquid crystal device is changed to affect the number of split light beams incident on the bar code symbol.

Several different embodiments are disclosed of a simple, compact bar code scanner which is capable of scanning in any one of several modes, a linear scan mode for scans along a single axis, an omnidirectional scan mode for scans with consecutive scan lines which are angularly displaced relative to each other, or a raster scan mode for scans with consecutive scan lines along a first scan axis which are displaced relative to each other along a second perpendicular axis. In a preferred embodiment, the compact bar code scanner is used in a small housing mounted on an index finger of an operator such that the natural pointing direction of the index finger aims the scanner. In one embodiment, a high frequency flexural member, with a scanning mirror and permanent magnet mounted thereon, is supported by a low frequency flexural member. An x drive coil is positioned by the permanent magnet, and with an applied high frequency x drive signal, causes the high frequency flexural member, with the permanent magnet means and scanning mirror mounted thereon, to torsionally oscillate at the frequency of the x drive signal. A y drive coil is also positioned by the permanent magnet, and with an applied low frequency y drive signal, causes the low frequency flexural member to oscillate to cause low frequency y scanning of the scanning mirror, thereby resulting in a raster scan pattern. With an applied high frequency y drive signal, the y coil causes the high frequency flexural member to oscillate at a high frequency to cause high frequency y scanning of the mirror, thereby resulting in an omnidirectional scan patterns.

A hand-held bar code reader, in particular a bar code wand is used by a consumer to read bar code information accompanying a product displayed at a retail outlet. The bar code information can be presented in, for example, UPC format and carries information relating to the products. The consumer subsequently down-loads information stored in the reader via a suitable interface to a personal computer which accesses information identified by a address included in or comprising the bar code information. The site contains additional information such as price information concerning the advertised product and the consumer may be able to pay for and order the product directly via the site. As a result the consumer has a simple reminder of the product, is able to obtain additional information concerning the product with minimum difficulty and can obtain the product itself with maximum ease.

A CCD based bar code scanner having a focusing system for assisting an operator in determining a proper relative position between the scanner and the bar code. The scanner also includes an illumination system for illuminating the bar code, a collection system for detecting the light reflected from the illuminated bar code and a processor for processing the detected signals.

A scanner with an extended depth of focus for electro-optically reading indicia having parts of different light reflectivity, comprises a collection optical system for collecting radiation reflected from objects in the field of view along plural different optical axes and an optical detector for detecting radiation collected by the collection optical system along each of the plural different optical axes and for generating electrical output signals indicative thereof. The scanner further includes processing circuitry for processing the output signals of the optical detector by comparing the output signals of the optical detector with one another, a memory for storing the detector output signals and further processing circuitry receiving the stored output signals of the optical detector from the memory and selectively outputting one of the received signals to a decoder.

A self-adjusting adaptive scanning system includes a scanner, responsive to coordinate control signals, for directing a light beam in a pattern at a bar code symbol, for detecting a reflected portion of the light beam, and for generating feedback signals reflecting successful decodes. A microprocessor, responsive to the feedback signals, generates pattern control signals. A pattern generator generates the coordinate control signals in response to the pattern control signals to select a desirable light beam pattern.

A bar code scanner employs an electronic means for causing the light beam to scan a bar code symbol, rather than using a mechanical device to generate the scan. A linear array of light sources, activated one at a time in a regular sequence, may be imaged upon the bar code symbol to simulate a scanned beam. Instead of a single linear array of light sources, a multiple-line array may be employed, producing multiple scan lines. The multiple scan lines may be activated in sequence, or activated simultaneously (time-division or frequency-division multiplexed. The multiple scan lines can provide signal enhancement, noise reduction or fault correction if directed to the same bar code pattern. Multiple scan lines may be generated using a single light source and a beam splitter, with mechanical scanning, as well as by the sequentially-activated light sources. Multiple simultaneous scan lines may be employed to generate a raster scan at lower mechanical scan frequency. In another embodiment, a tunable laser may be employed to provide a scan without moving parts; a laser beam from the tunable laser is reflected from a diffraction grating that produces an angular deviation dependent upon the wavelength of the laser output. As the frequency of the tunable laser is varied in some selected pattern, the laser beam will scan accordingly.
