摘要: Novel terphenyls having a relatively high clearing point and which are suitable for use in liquid crystal materials or in the preparation of compounds for use in such material are characterised by a formula: ##STR1## wherein: R.sub.1 is selected from H, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy and alkoxycarbonyloxy;R.sub.2 is selected from H, alkyl, alkoxy;X.sub.1 is selected from H and fluorine;X.sub.2 is selected from H and fluorine; and ##STR2## is selected from ##STR3## and ##STR4## provided that one of X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 is fluroine. Compounds wherein ##STR5## is ##STR6## or ##STR7## are generally useful as liquid crystal compounds.

摘要: This invention relates to fluorinated oligophenyls of formula (I), in which a is 0 or 1 and in which the terminal substituents R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each independently an alkyl or alkenyl residue each with up to 15 C atoms, optionally substituted by CN or by at least one halogen atom, and wherein one or more non adjacent CH.sub.2 groups of these residues may be replaced by --O--, --S--, --CO--, --O--CO--, --CO--O--, --O--CO--O-- or --C.tbd.C--, one of the residues R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may also denote a group of formula (II), any one of the following pairs of lateral substituents are both fluorine: (A, B), (C, D), (D, E), (C, E), (B, C), (D, J), (D, K), (A, C), (C, J), (C', D'), (D', E), (D', A), (C', E), (C', A), (D', J'), (D', K'), (C', J'), (B, G), (A, G), all of the other lateral substituents being hydrogen or fluorine, and to their use as components of liquid crystalline compositions.

摘要: ##STR1## Ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal mixtures are provided consisting of two constituents; a smectic host and another containing a chiral compound in which rotation of the chiral center relative to the molecular core is sterically hindered, so that the chiral compound induces a high Ps in the mixture. A preferred class of chiral compounds is those derived from naturally occurring compounds with chiral groups, especially α-hydroxycarboxylic acids, amino acids and terpenoids, e.g. with chiral groups (I), (II), (III). The chiral group is incorporated into a compound containing a mesogenic combination of groups, e.g. with chains of cyclic groups and some mesogenic combinations are described.

摘要: Methods, based on the Wittig-Horner reaction, are provided for the synthesis of compounds of formula (I) where m is from 5-150, X and Y are independently selected from: CN, H, OH, COCH3, CO2H, CO2H, CO2R1, where R1 is C1-12 alkyl, NCS, SCN, CF3, CH2X where X is F, Cl, Br, OH, CHF2 and formula (IB), where J for each X and Y group is independently selected from: CH2, single covalent bond, OOC, CO2, O, CH2O, OCH2, CH2CO2, CH2OOC; p=1-20; L for each X and Y group is independently selected from: O, CH2OCO, CO2, S, NH; (a) is defined by formula (IC), where rings A, B and C are independently selected from phenyl, cyclohexyl, pyridine and pyrimidine and may be independently of each other substituted with at least one of Cl or F; linking groups A and B may be selected from single bond, CO2, OOC, CH2O, OCH2, CH2CH2, C≡C; Z is selected from CN, F, Cl, NO2, R, OR, CO2R, CF3, OOCR, NCS, SCN, where R=straight chain or branched chain alkyl and may include from 1-16 carbon atoms and including where one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be substituted by CH(CN), CH(CF3), CH(Cl), CH(CH3) in chiral or non-chiral form; provided that at least one of X and Y is selected from (IB); the method polymerizing a compound of general formula (II), where X and Y are defined as formula (I).

摘要: The invention comprises liquid crystalline polyesters suited to be used as a medium for optical data storage, especially reversible (or erasable) optical data storage. The polyesters comprise the polycondensation product of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof and propane diol which on its center carbon bears a mesogenic substituent comprising two rings, either alicyclic or aromatic. Preferably also the dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof is mesogenically substituted. The invention further comprises a medium for optical data storage containing polyesters of the above type.
