摘要: An electrophoretic display device includes a display layer comprised of a binder having a multiplicity of individual cavities therein that contain a display medium, and conductive substrates, at least one of the conductive substrates being transparent, wherein the display layer is located in between the conductive substrates, and wherein the display medium comprises one or more set of colored particles in a dielectric fluid and has an electrical conductivity of about 10−11 to about 10−15 S/m. The display device may be made by forming composite particles comprised of a sacrificial binder and the one or more set of particles of the display medium; mixing the composite particles with the binder to form a mixture; forming a layer from the mixture; removing the sacrificial binder from the composite particles in the layer to form cavities in the layer that contain the one or more set of colored particles; and filling the cavities with the dielectric fluid.

摘要: Methods form multi-color electrophoretic displays. The method includes providing a solution containing microcapsules, wherein the microcapsules comprise a shell that is transparent and a display medium within the shell, wherein the display medium comprised of either (a) at least two sets of differently colored particles in a substantially clear fluid, or (b) at least one set of colored particles in a differently colored fluid. The method includes dispensing the solution onto a substrate, wherein a display layer of microcapsules is formed on the substrate. The method includes positioning a conductive substrate adjacent to the substrate, wherein the substrate is located between the display layer and the conductive substrate, wherein the conductive substrate applies an electric field to at least one microcapsule of the display layer, wherein the sets of particles of each microcapsule in the display layer are movable within the microcapsule by the electric field to be displayed.

摘要: A lateral wire apparatus allows direct lateral viewing of particles of electrophoretic ink (e.g., liquid emulsion aggregation particle (LEAP) ink) that are undergoing electrophoretic migration. Electrophoretic ink movement is commonly monitored by placing the ink through the top electrode, but as the toner particles migrate back and forth between the two electrodes, the viewer can not see what lies beneath the top electrode. This may hide commonly known failure modes, such as particle agglomeration, swishing of particles due to hydrodynamic effects. The lateral wire apparatus includes two narrow gauge wires glued to a glass substrate and held apart at a fixed distance to help maintain a uniform electric field across the gap. A plastic block with pegs that situated at a fixed distance and threaded screws is used to make the lateral wire apparatus with precise wire spacing that may be reproducibly made in less than five minutes using inexpensive and readily available materials.

摘要: A method for making toners to include at least one nanoscale fluorescent pigment particle composition and/or a fluorescent organic nanoparticle composition. The particles are incorporated into emulsion of toner and used in making toner via emulsion aggregation. Such toners may have a core and/or a shell and the clay composites may be included within the core, the shell or both. The fluorescent organic nanoparticle composition includes a polymeric matrix obtained by modified EA latex process and/or emulsion polymerization and one or more fluorescent dyes and the nanoscale fluorescent pigment particle composition includes pigment molecules with at least one functional moiety, and a sterically bulky stabilizer compound including at least one functional group, the functional moiety of the pigment associates non-covalently with the functional group of the stabilizer, and the presence of the associated stabilizer limits the extent of particle growth and aggregation, to afford nanoscale-sized pigment particles.
