Abstract: A backlight unit includes LEDs, a light guide plate, a prism sheet, exiting light reflecting portions, prisms, concave lenticular lens lenses, and flat portions. The concave lenticular lenses are configured such that an occupancy rate of concave cylindrical lenses with respect to the second direction is higher in an area closer to a light entering surface with respect to the first direction and the occupancy rate is lower in an area farther from the light entering surface. The flat portions are formed adjacent to the concave cylindrical lenses with respect to the second direction such that an occupancy rate of flat portions with respect to the second direction is lower in an area closer to a light entering surface with respect to the first direction and the occupancy rate of the flat portions with respect to the second direction is higher in an area farther from the light entering surface.

The restricting member 26 is inserted in the through hole 23 to be in contact with an inner surface of the through hole 23 to restrict movement of the optical member 16 along a plate surface of the optical member 16.

Abstract: A backlight assembly includes a light source, a light guide optically coupled to the light source that receives light from the light source, a substrate including an electrode layer and a hydrophobic surface located on the electrode layer, wherein the hydrophobic surface of the substrate is spaced apart from a surface of the light guide to define a cell gap, and a plurality of conductive liquid beads located within the cell gap. Liquid beads that are subject to an actuation voltage applied to the electrode layer are in an actuated state, and liquid beads that are not subject to an actuation voltage applied to the electrode layer are in a non-actuated state. When the liquid beads are in the non-actuated state, the liquid beads are in contact with the surface of the light guide for extracting light from the light guide, and when the liquid beads are in the actuated state, the liquid beads deform such that contact of the liquid beads with the surface of the light guide is reduced relative to the non-actuated state to reduce extraction of light from the lightguide, thereby dimming the backlight assembly.

Abstract: A backlight device (12) includes a light guide plate (14), and LEDs (17), and wiring portions (18c). The light guide plate (14) has a substantially circular outer shape and has fan-shaped areas (SA) defined by segment lines (SL) extending through a center (C) thereof. All the segment lines (SL) meet at the center (C). The LEDs (17) are arranged such that middle positions between LEDs (17) each located at an end in the circumferential direction in the respective sets of the LEDs (17) provided for the fan-shaped areas (SA) adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction coincides with the segment lines (SL). The wiring portions (18c) are equal or larger in number than the LEDs (17) included in each of the sets of LEDs (17) provided for the fan-shaped areas (SA) and are configured to supply electric power to the respective LEDs (17).

Abstract: A backlight unit includes a light emission reflecting portion, first reflecting protrusions, and second reflecting protrusions. The light emission reflecting portion includes unit reflecting portions that include main reflecting surfaces and light reentering surfaces arranged opposite to the main reflecting surfaces, respectively.
