摘要: A method and system (10) are presented for producing exciting radiation (P′) to be used in producing an output coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering (CARS) signal of a medium (12). An input spectral phase coherent optical pulse (P), carrying a pump, a Stokes and a probe photon, is optically processed by adjusting spectral phase and polarization of wavelength components of the input pulse to produce a unitary optical exciting pulse (P′) that carries the pump photon, the Stokes photon and multiple probe photons and is capable of inducing interference between contributions from at least some of vibrational levels in the CARS signal.

摘要: A method and device are provided for automatically generating a key and a conjugate key to be used in an optical code division multiple access system. The method comprises applying a down conversion process to pump input light to thereby produce down converted broadband signal and idler fields that are complex conjugates of each other. The signal and idler fields thus serve as the key and its conjugate. Also provided according to the invention is a method for use in coding/decoding a signal in an optical code division multiple access system.

摘要: A tunable optical filter is provided that includes an array of independently tunable filter elements. Each of the elements is located along a different optical path that extends between an input and an output port. Optical assemblies for receiving an incident optical signal for providing a filtered optical signal are also provided. In one embodiment, polarization independent spectral filtering can be achieved. Wavelength selectable add/drop multiplexers and demultiplexers, dynamic gain equalizers and attenuators, optical channel blockers and branch filters, switches, and modulators are also provided. Furthermore, methods for constructing and operating filters consistent with this invention are also provided.

摘要: A method for determining the fine structure of materials by means of a nonlinear scanning laser microscope, including the steps of forming an image of a specimen by scanning selected points thereof with a focusable laser beam of a predetermined fundamental frequency w, thereby exciting the points to generate signals constituting the third harmonic 3w of said fundamental frequency w, collecting the signals by collecting means, substantially filtering out from the collected 3w signals, signals of a frequency other than the third harmonic 3w, feeding the filtered 3w signals to a detector, and storing the output of the detector for processing and display. A nonlinear scanning laser microscope adapted to form an image of a specimen by scanning it point by point with a focusable laser beam of a predetermined fundamental frequency, is also provided.

摘要: An apparatus and method for flattening the gain of an optical fiber amplifier (18) doped with an ion such as erbium and which is pumped by a pump laser (20). Optical couplers (32, 34) inserted before and after the fiber amplifier couple the main optical path to an optical ring passing through the fiber amplifier so as to form a ring laser. An optical isolator (32) placed in the ring causes the lasing light to only counterpropagate relative to the optical signal being amplified. When the fiber amplifier primarily exhibits inhomogeneous broadening and the ring lases, the lasing light clamps the gain to a value determined by the loop loss, and the value of the clamped gain is relatively uniform across a wide bandwidth.
