A polymer which has a radical polymerizable unsaturated group in a side chain and can be made a molecular design suitable for the purpose; a curable resin composition containing the polymer, which provides a cured product having high surface hardness after curing and hardly suffering from scratch; the cured product; and an article obtained by laminating the cured product are provided. The polymer (A) of the present invention is obtained by polymerizing, at least, a vinyl monomer represented by the following general formula (1) and a cyclic ether compound represented by the following general formula (2). The polymer (A) of the present invention is preferably obtained by polymerization of 1 wt % or more and 99.9 wt % or less of a vinyl monomer represented by the general formula (1), 0.1 wt % or more and 99 wt % or less of a cyclic ether compound represented by the general formula (2) and 0 wt % or more and 98.9 wt % or less of the other cationic polymerizable monomer. When a response from a storage device to a data input/output request is not received within a predetermined time period, the information processing apparatus transmits a second and a third data input/output requests from the first communication port on the first communication channel, and transmits an inspection request to the switch to inspect a second communication port on the first communication channel. When responses to the second and third data input/output requests are not received within a predetermined time period, and a response to the inspection request is received within a predetermined time period, the information processing apparatus determines that there is a fault in the first communication port on the first communication channel.

A method and apparatus for processing a query is provided. A query for a set of Matching XML documents is received. A client may transmit the query for a set of XML documents to the database server. The database server transmits a request for the set of XML documents to a persistent storage. The persistent storage uses an index, at least in part, to obtain the set of XML documents sought by the query. The index stores a first set of entries comprising information about the location of elements, a second set of entries comprising information about element attributes, and a third set of entries comprising information about element values. In responding to a particular query, additional XML documents that are not indexed by the index may also be checked to determine if they correspond to the set of search criteria.

A system and method is provided for generating an inverted index and processing search queries using the inverted index. To increase efficiency for queries having multiple numeric range conditions, numeric attributes are tokenized into a plurality of tokens based on their binary value. The tokens become keys in the inverted index. A numeric range query is translated into a query on multiple tokens and combining two or more range queries on different attributes becomes a simple merge of document identification lists.

The gap between an insertion hole formed in a covering of a ladle and an electrode inserted through the insertion hole is sealed by sealing means. The sealing means has a cap seal longitudinally and slidably fitted over the electrode. A base seal is hermetically disposed between the cap seal and the covering in such a manner that a gap is provided between the electrode and the base seal. The base seal has a gas injection nozzle intended to discharge a gas toward the electrode and another gas injection nozzle intended to discharge the gas downwardly. The use of the base and cap seals enables securing the sealing functions thereof despite any movement of the electrode, thus preventing the pickup of [N] as well as the reoxidation of molten steel. When a gas seal is effected by the formation of a flow of gas rotating around the electrode about the axis thereof, the sealing performance can be more enhanced. Further, when the base seal is cooled by causing cooling water to be circulated therethrough, its durability can also be enhanced.

A process for desulfurizing molten steel comprising the steps of: removing converter slag from molten steel; adding a desulfurizing flux onto the molten steel from which the converter slag has been removed; supplying power to electrodes at a predetermined distance from the molten steel so as to generate an electric arc, the desulfurizing flux being melted by arc-heating so as to form the slag; and introducing a gas into the molten steel through a lance submerged into the molten steel to stir the molten steel and the slag which are arc-heated. In the process the desulfurizing flux is melted to a slag consisting essentially of 53 to 62% of CaO, 0 to 15% of SiO.sub.2, and 30 to 45% of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.
