    摘要: A socket bearing for implantation in a patient's body as part of a ball and socket joint is provided. The joint includes a ball portion and a socket portion. The ball portion includes a ball connected to a neck, and the socket portion includes two spaced-apart coaxial pin members which engage the socket bearing and allow the bearing to rotate in the assembled joint. The inner surface of the bearing forms a cavity for receiving the ball, and the outer surface includes two spaced-apart, cylindrically-shaped surfaces for receiving the pin members. The bearing can encompass either more than half or less than half of the ball, so that in the assembled joint, the ball is either physically constrained or not physically constrained within the bearing.

    摘要: A ball and socket joint for implanting in the body is provided which comprises (1) a ball; (2) a cup to be affixed to bone which includes (a) a spherical cavity and (b) two coaxial pin members which extend into the cavity; and (3) a bearing member surrounding a portion of the ball and rotatable within said spherical cavity about said coaxial pin members, the bearing member having an asymmetric opening therein, the opening having an angular extent of less than 180.degree. in at least one plane. In certain preferred embodiments, the cup includes first and second portions, the first portion to be affixed to bone, the second portion having associated therewith the coaxial pin members and being moveable with respect to the first portion to provide a plurality of possible orientations for the axis of rotation of the bearing member within the spherical cavity.

    摘要: A surgical milling tool includes a body having a hemispherically-shaped outer surface and defining an internal cavity. Cutting blades carried at spaced locations on the outer surface are operative to mill tissues of a joint socket when the tool is introduced and rotated in the socket. Holes are formed through the outer surface and communicate with the internal cavity to channel cut-off tissues into the cavity as the tool is rotated. A tool support is releasably connected to the tool body to assist in positioning and rotating the body. The support includes a cover which releasably closes the body cavity to retain cut-off tissues within the cavity. Several related tool body and tool support embodiments are described which include structures for releasably drivingly connecting the tool body and the tool support. Some of the embodiments include movable latching elements for securing connections formed between the tool bodies and the tool supports.
