Abstract:
A medical device for implantation in a hip joint of a patient is provided. The medical device is adapted to be fixated to the femoral bone of the patient. The medical device comprises an inner and an outer surface, wherein a contacting portion of said inner surface is spherical and adapted to face the center of the hip joint when said medical device is implanted, and wherein said medical device is adapted to receive a prosthetic replacement for the caput femur fixated to the pelvic bone having a spherical portion. The medical device comprises at least one extending portion, extending said contacting portion of said inner surface such that said at least one extending portion clasps said spherical portion of said prosthetic replacement for the caput femur, such that said spherical portion is restrained in said medical device.
Abstract:
The invention provides an apparatus comprising a prosthetic femoral head and a liner. The prosthetic femoral head has a truncated spherical body, a truncated surface, and a stem cavity. The liner has a liner cavity and a rim wherein said liner cavity comprises a greater-than-hemispherical concavity and said rim comprises at least one slot. The slot allows insertion of the prosthetic femoral head into the liner cavity at an insertion orientation and retaining the prosthetic femoral head in the liner cavity at orientations other than the insertion orientation.
Abstract:
The present invention provides monopolar acetabular liners (32, 54) that can enclose a femoral head (14) to form a hip replacement prosthesis (30, 50), wherein the liner (32, 54) has a rim (34) that creates an orifice, wherein the orifice has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head (14), and wherein the liner (32, 54) encompasses greater than 50 percent of the volume of the head (14), wherein a constraining ring (56) can be used in conjunction with the monopolar constrained acetabular liner (32, 54) to provide additional support for the femoral head (14) to stay with the acetabular liner (32, 54) and avoid dislocation. Assemblies and complete prosthetic replacements are also provided. Liners (32, 54) and constraining rings (56) having no, one or more recesses (36) also are provided.

Abstract:
A medical prosthesis for use within the body which is formed of radiation treated ultra high molecular weight polyethylene having substantially no detectable free radicals, is described. Preferred prostheses exhibit reduced production of particles from the prosthesis during wear of the prosthesis, and are substantially oxidation resistant. Methods of manufacture of such devices and material used therein are also provided.

Abstract:
A hip prosthesis (20) having a shell (22), liner (24), and retainer ring (26) is utilized for hip arthroplasty. The liner (24) fits inside the shell (22), which is attached to a patient's pelvis, and the retainer ring (26) engages a terminal liner margin (54) to inhibit expansion of and decrease the size of a restricted liner opening (72) defined by the liner margin (54). By inhibiting expansion of the liner opening (72), the ball (92) of a patient's femur (90) is securely held in the liner (24). In one embodiment, the liner (98) is inhibited from rotation relative to the shell (96) by a plurality of protrusions (106) which mate with recesses (102) in the shell (96). In that embodiment, the liner (98) is provided with catch lips (108) to hold the liner (98) in the shell (96) and a positioning flange (110) which operates to form a relief gap (120) between the shell (96) and the liner (98). In another embodiment, the retainer ring comprises an attachment portion (128) and a retainer portion (130) with a threaded connection (132) between the attachment portion (128) and the retainer portion (130).
Abstract:
