Abstract:
A control loop for extrusion of a metallic build material such as bulk metallic glass measures a force required to extrude the build material, and uses this sensed parameter to estimate a temperature of the build material. The temperature, or a difference between the estimated temperature and a target temperature, can be used to speed or slow extrusion of the build material to control heat transfer from a heating system along the feedpath. This general control loop may be modified to account for other possible conditions such as nozzle clogging or the onset of crystallization.

A printer fabricates an object from a computerized model using a fused filament fabrication process and a metallic build material. One or more contact probes may be used to detect a height and/or position of a nozzle, e.g., to zero, center, or otherwise calibrate the nozzle prior to a print, or to determine a height relative to a deposited layer of build material during fabrication.
Abstract:
A printer fabricates an object from a computerized model using a fused filament fabrication process and a metallic build material. A plasma depassivation wash is applied during deposition to remove oxidation and improve interlayer bonding between successive layers of the metallic build material. Other techniques such as ultrasonic vibration, formation of energy directors, joule heating, and the like, may be used in combination to form a mechanically robust bond between layers.

A method and apparatus for producing titanium metal powder from a melt. The apparatus includes an atomization chamber having an inner wall that is coated with or formed entirely of CP-Ti to prevent contamination of titanium metal powder therein. The inner surfaces of all components of the apparatus in a flow path following the atomization chamber may also be coated with or formed entirely of CP-Ti.

An electrically conductive composite material for use in the manufacture of electrical contact components, consisting of a metal strip and a contact layer made of a silver or tin contact material, which contact layer is applied at least to one side of the metal strip, whereby the contact material contains as a first additive 0.5 to 60 weight percentage of carbon powder in the form of fine particles having a diameter of ø1=5 to 200 nm and 0.5 to 60 weight percentage of a second powdery additive in the form of fine particles having a diameter of ø2=5 to 200 nm. Moreover a device for the gas atomization of a jet of a flowable or liquid material and a method for the manufacture of an electrically conductive composite material and its use are disclosed.

Uniform sized and shaped spheres are formed by applying a minute periodic disturbance to a low viscosity liquid material. Pressure forces the material through at least one orifice in a crucible as a steady laminar stream. The stream enters an enclosed controlled temperature solidification environment which contains at least one heat transfer medium. A charging means is applied to the stream as the stream exits the crucible and breaks into a plurality of spheres to deflect the spheres as they pass through an electric field. The enclosed controlled temperature solidification environment cools and substantially solidifies the spheres.

A tablet formed by prealloys iron-aluminum produced from atomized powders to be used as additive element in aluminum alloys, is manufactured by the method having the steps of obtaining a metallic alloy by fusion of iron and aluminum with the iron and aluminum added in an electric arc or induction furnace, atomizing the melted alloy by transporting the melted alloy to an intermediary container with an opening as a metal flux controlled by a valve located in the opening for controlling and proportionating a continuous flux and supplying a jet of water under pressure when the liquid metal drains to provide atomization and to produce small droplets that cool in water, solidify and are deposited as a powder; reducing humidity of the powder; classifying the thusly produced material, and compacting a thin fraction of the material for obtaining tablets; a tablet.

An apparatus for forming three-dimensional objects includes a crucible (1) for holding a molten material; a conically-shaped orifice (1a) having a fixed outlet diameter (do) at the bottom of the crucible through which a jet (50) of the molten material flows towards the substrate; and an oscillating mechanical member (5) for breaking the flow of molten material into the molten material drops (60). The oscillating mechanical member further includes a conically-shaped head (5a) for cooperating with the orifice (1a) and for varying the effective size of the orifice. The conically-shaped head includes a slanted radial portion (5c) and a tip portion (5b) extending through the orifice. The effective diameter (deff) of the jet is defined by the relationship deff=[d02−(d0−δ tan θ)2]1/2, wherein δ represents the amount of the tip portion extending through the orifice, and θ represents a slant angle corresponding to the slanted radial portion of the conically-shaped head.

The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus that use electrostatic and/or electromagnetic fields to enhance the process of spray forming preforms or powders. The present invention also describes methods and apparatus for atomization and heat transfer with non-equilibrium plasmas. The present invention is also directed to articles, particularly for use in gas turbine engines, produced by the methods of the invention.
