Production of water-soluble cationic dyes by reaction of 1-lower alkyl- Delta 2, -indolineacetaldehydes, primary and secondary aromatic amines and orthophosphoric acid in an inert watermiscible organic solvent. This improved process provides a substantially quantitative product yield while avoiding addition of dye-precipitating agent to the reaction mass.
