    摘要: A three element fluid torque converter has a variable pitch stator. The stator blades have two principal orientations, closed and open. The blades are biased toward the closed position by a spring loaded annular piston. In the closed position, the blades block approximately 75% to 90% of the annular area between a stator core and a stator shell. An inlet angle for the stator blades is between 30 degrees and 70 degrees in the closed position. This combination reduces creep torque without any significant increase in driveline noise and vibration when the engine is idling. As engine speed and torque are increased, the blades overcome the spring bias to rotate to the open position thereby increasing the torque transmitted to effectively propel the vehicle.

    摘要: A novel torque converter is disclosed which utilizes streamwise vorticity as well as a mean flow within the passageways of the machine to transfer energy efficiency over an extended utility ratio. This is accomplished with novel blade structures utilizing salient edges disposed in part along the mean flow path. Pairs of counter rotating vortices are produced by the impeller blades. The direction of rotation of these vortices is reversed by the turbine blades, efficiently transferring torque from the impeller to the turbine. At speed ratio zero the directions of rotation of the vortices leaving the turbine are again reversed by the stator to impart torque to the stator. This continues until the design speed ratio is achieved. Thereafter, the vortices are guided by the stator passages to the impeller. Below the design speed ratio, the impeller guides the vortices through it to the turbine where their flow is reversed. Above the design speed, the vortices from the stator are reversed by the impeller. At all speed ratios, the vortices of the invention flow with the mean flow through the hydraulic circuit. Their flow is not reversed.

The annular members are rotatable relative to one another approximately one-half blade pitch. The annular member becomes located in the inlet region of the blade row, is rotatable by the torque of the circulating flow only in the region of the installed condition against the force of the spring to a position that reduces the inlet cross section of the blade row.

The outer and inner shells cooperate to define outer and inner toroidal surfaces, which together define a hollow toroidal hydraulic fluid circulation path. The ratio between the axial extent and the radical extent of a section of the outer toroidal surface is less than approximately 0.9. The axial distance between the general axial position of the edges of the stator vanes which define the stator inlet and the axial position of the edge of the stator inner shell in the direction of the stator inlet is substantially greater than zero, and the stator vanes which define the stator inlet extend more towards the direction of the turbine outlet than does the edge of the stator inner shell in the direction of the stator inlet.

    摘要: A sand core pattern (11) for producing a one-piece cast wheel (10) having a radially inner shell (12), a radially outer blade support (13), and a plurality of angled blades (14) extending in a spaced, annular array (22). The pattern includes a plurality of similar segments (15), each having an inner end portion (18) defining a portion of the profile of the shell, and an outer end portion (21) defining the profile of the blade. The segments are supported in annular array about a mandrel (25) and are circumscribed by a split ring (26) defining the pattern for the outer blade support portion of the wheel (10). The inner portions of the segments are defined by angled side surfaces (16,17) which, in alternate ones of the segments in the annular array, converge and diverge toward the center of the array. Upon completion of the forming of the sand mold about the pattern, the mandrel and outer ring are removed, permitting the segments having the inwardly diverging side faces to be withdrawn inwardly from the array and permit the remaining segments then to be withdrawn inwardly therefrom.
