摘要:
A magnetic head is provided for use with magnetic recording media of varying stiffness. The head includes a first and a second elongated support spaced apart on a facing surface with support surfaces extending along a longitudinal axis. A core support is positioned between the two elongated supports and is wider than the support surfaces to distribute tape contact pressures. The core support includes a transducer core with an elongated contact surface positioned to extend transverse to the longitudinal axis of the support surfaces. An edge member is positioned adjacent the contact surface of the transducer core to control wear and direct airflow. The edge member includes a wear surface of a material with greater wear resistance than the transducer core. A second edge member is provided on the opposite side of the contact surface of the transducer core to accommodate multi-direction tape travel.

A batch fabrication technique is described that increases the manufacturing efficiency of servo write heads and also improves servo pattern definition for fine features, while reducing tape and head wear. Multiple heads are fabricated as a batch from one or more ferrite wafers. A nominally flat, large wafer surface and a contour suitable for uniform photoresist application and planar photolithography permit fine servo pattern definition. A rounded leading edge on the head creates an air bearing to reduce wear of the tape and of the head. Moreover, any head wear occurs at the leading edge rather than in the region of the head where the servo pattern is formed. The servo write head may have a substantially planar head surface. A leading edge is disposed adjacent to the head surface such that the tape contacts the leading edge before passing over the head surface. The leading edge is rounded to form an air bearing between the head surface and the tape. A rounded trailing edge may be disposed adjacent to the head surface such that the tape passes over the trailing edge after passing over the head surface. The head may be formed from an upper ferrite wafer having a non-magnetic spacer. Non-magnetic material is photolithographically defined to produce gaps above the spacer. The non-magnetic material may be photoresist, semiconductor materials, glass, metal or the like. The material may even be removed later to leave air gaps. The non-magnetic material forms a region where the field loops out to intersect the passing tape, thereby transferring a magnetic pattern to tape. Additionally, a lower ferrite wafer may be mated to the upper ferrite wafer to complete a magnetic circuit around the gaps. The upper or lower ferrite wafer may have a channel through which an inductive winding passes. Multiple heads may be formed through batch processing of the upper and lower ferrite wafers.

A tape recorder of the invention comprises a fixed guide member 5 disposed for a path of travel of a magnetic tape 10 between a tension post 43 and a full-width erasing head 21 and having a tape guide face 54 to be brought into sliding contact with the lower of a pair of side edges of the tape 10 between the main surface thereof, with the lower side edge positioned closer to the chassis 1. The fixed guide member 5 regulates the level of the tape 10 widthwise thereof by receiving the lower side edge of the tape by the tape guide face 54 while being held out of contact with the main surface of the tape 10. The recorder can be manufactured at a lower cost without impairing the accuracy of the path of travel of the tape.

A cleaning cartridge for cleaning a reciprocating read/write head of a tape drive. The cartridge includes a cleaning tape and cleaning segments that cooperate to clean the tape contacting surface and the air-bleed slots of a read/write head as it moves thereagainst. The cleaning segments are preferably mounted on a carrier that may be displaced to accommodate different models of tape drives having various read/write head projection depths, and which may include a resilient member for urging the cleaning segments towards the read/write head with a predetermined amount of force.

A servo head having a substantially planar head surface and a leading rounded edge is disclosed with a technique of utilizing the disclosed servo head to write to tape passing over the planar head surface, the tape separate from the servo head by an air bearing. The rounded leading edge on the head creates the air bearing to reduce wear of the tape and of the head. Moreover, any head wear occurs at the leading edge rather than in the region of the head where the servo pattern is formed. The servo write head may have a substantially planar head surface. A leading edge is disposed adjacent to the head surface such that the tape contacts the leading edge before passing over the head surface. The leading edge is rounded to form the air bearing between the head surface and the tape. A rounded trailing edge may be disposed adjacent to the head surface such that the tape passes over the trailing edge after passing over the head surface.

A magnet-head device for a magnetic-tape apparatus having a rotatably supported head disc carrying magnetic heads (10) at its periphery. A magnetic head has lateral additional limbs (12) which extend into the path of the magnetic tape (14), so that their end faces (12a) form a common contact face with the end face (11a) of the magnetic head (10).

A multi-element read/write tape head with low feedthrough includes a multi-element write module with a plurality of write elements. Each write element can write a data track onto magnetic tape as the magnetic tape passes over the write module tape contact surface. The tape head also includes at least one multi-element read module in close proximity with the write module. Each read module has a magnetically permeable substrate, a plurality of read elements built on the substrate top surface, and a cover over each read element and a portion of the substrate top surface. Each read element can read a data track from the magnetic tape as the magnetic tape passes over the read module tape contact surface. The substrate bottom surface is facing the write module thereby providing a low reluctance path for feedthrough from each write element that does not include any read element.

The present invention provides a cleaning apparatus for cleaning the air bearing surface of a magnetic head of a tape drive by employing components of an actuator for oscillating the magnetic head against bristles of a brush assembly. Circuitry is provided which senses the appropriate time to commence the cleaning action and continues the cleaning action for an appropriate duration when the magnetic tape is off the magnetic head. The circuitry causes the actuator to move the magnetic head in oscillatory motion against stationary bristles of a brush assembly which are selectively brought into engagement with the magnetic head. The engagement and disengagement of the bristles with respect to the magnetic head are implemented by a lever arm which has camming surfaces which are engageable with a leader pin which moves a leader block and magnetic tape about a guide and across the magnetic head.

Disclosed is a dimple magnetic recording head in a transducer assembly for linear tape drives. The dimple head has a flat transducing surface extending laterally a partial width of the magnetic recording tape. Two parallel tape support surfaces extend laterally the full width of the magnetic recording tape, positioned on either side of and spaced from the dimple head in the longitudinal direction of the magnetic recording tape. The tape support surfaces form a plane, and the dimple head flat transducing surface is parallel to the tape support surface plane and projects above the tape support surface plane to form tape wrap angles with respect to the tape support surfaces within a range of approximately 1/2 degree to 2.5 degrees. The dimple magnetic tape head is mass produced by lapping a row of transducers on a substrate to form a flat transducing surface. The row of substrate elements is then diced into separate substrate elements. The two parallel, spaced apart tape support surfaces are provided, and one of the diced substrate elements is mounted intermediate the tape support surfaces with the flat transducing surface exposed for forming a tape facing surface.
