A nonwoven fabric comprised of a lactide polymer. The lactide polymer comprises a plurality of poly(lactide) polymer chains, residual lactide in concentration of less than about 2 percent and water in concentration of less than about 2000 parts-per-million. A process for manufacturing a nonwoven fabric with the lactide polymer composition is also disclosed.

The present invention provides a process for preparing biodegradable aliphatic polyester grafted with polyether which comprises a step of ring opening polymerization of a hydrophilic monomer of epoxide-substituted ethyleneglycolmethylether oligomer or ethyleneglycol oligomer, and a biocompatible cyclic monomer forming polymer backbone with the said monomer, and a non-toxic biodegradable polymer prepared therefrom. In accordance with the invention, the graft ratio and molecular weight of polyether in the biodegradable aliphatic polyester can be easily controlled, and the hydrophlicity and crystallinity are also regulated thereby. The biodegradable polymer of the invention has features of minimized protein adhesion and superior softness, due to its hydrophilic side-chain. Accordingly, it can be applied as biomedical polymers such as the matrices for drug delivery system, suture thread, or bioabsorbable and water-soluble polymers.

A disposable article including a biodegradable nonwoven material having improved fluid management properties. The nonwoven material may be produced using thermoplastic compositions which comprise an unreacted mixture of a poly(lactic acid) polymer; a polybutylene succinate polymer or a polybutylene succinate adipate polymer, or a mixture of such polymers; and a wetting agent. The thermoplastic composition exhibits substantial biodegradable properties yet is easily processed. The biodegradable nonwoven materials may be used in a disposable absorbent product intended for the absorption of fluids such as body fluids.

A process for producing a biodegradable polymer having free carboxyl at the &ohgr;-end charcterized by polymerizing a cyclic ester compound in the presence of a hydroxymonocarboxylic acid derivative having protected carboxyl or a hydroxydicarboxylic acid derivative having protected carboxyl, and then deprotecting the thus obtained polymer having protected carboxyl at the &ohgr;-end. Use of the above process makes it easy to control the molecular weight of the target biodegradable polymer and the content of free carboxyl therein, thereby enabling the efficient production of a polymer having a high purity and being contaminated with littel catalyst remaining therein.

The invention relates to a process for preparing reabsorbable polyesters by bulk polymerisation, wherein the reaction components are melted and homogenised in a stirred reactor, the reaction mixture is then transferred into a number of smaller-volume containers, the reaction mixture is polymerised in these containers and the polyester obtained is isolated by removing it from the containers, and the use of the reabsorbable polyesters thus produced for preparing reabsorbable implants.

The present invention relates to a fibrous material which includes a plurality of polylactide containing fibers. The plurality of polylactide containing fibers can be considered low shrinkage or high shrinkage. The plurality of polylactide containing fibers are considered low shrinkage fibers if they provide a boiling water shrinkage propensity of less than about 20%. The plurality of polylactide containing fibers are considered high shrink fibers if they provide an average fiber boiling water shrinkage propensity of greater than about 10% and a heat of fusion of less than about 25 J/g. The invention additionally relates to the use of an extrusion process to provide low shrinkage fibers and high shrinkage fibers. The invention further relates to the use of these fibers in desirable products.

A method to regulate copolymer structure using lipase catalyzed transesterification reactions, by selecting a first reactant from the group consisting of polymers and monomers, selecting a second reactant from the group consisting of polymers and monomers, and combining the first reactant, the second reactant, and a lipase in a reaction vessel and allowing the ensuing transesterification reaction to proceed resulting in a polymer. The method allows one to regulate the copolymer repeat unit sequence distribution, and may take place with chain-length specificity such that activation of chains for exchange reactions with other chains or monomers can occur preferentially at certain locations along the chain.
