A turbine rotor (eg: a Pelton wheel) is described which comprises a plurality of individual radial body members (11) comprising one or more impeller elements (eg: buckets) (1). The radial body members comprises segments which have leading (13) and trailing (15) radial abutment surfaces that contact with the respective radial abutment surfaces of adjacent radial body members when assembled as a unit. Each radial body member comprises at least one further abutment (21), preferably two at opposite axial ends (17,19) thereof, and locating means (26,27) is provided which co-operates with the further abutment means, preferably directly. Wedging means which is tapered in the radial direction relative to the axis of rotation of the turbine rotor, acts between the radial body members and the locating means, and means is provided which acts via said wedging means to draw the radial body members radially inwards to hold them together as a unit. More particularly the locating means comprises two collars (26,27) which are engageable with a respective one of the axial end abutments (21) of the radial body members, and the wedging means comprises frusto conical formations of the further abutments of the radial body members and the locating means. The means acting via the wedging means to draw the body members radially inwards comprises axial clamping means (35) operable between the two collars and/or taper action locating means (34,38) securing the two collars to a connecting shaft or axle element (6).

This new invention, the water column floating pump, is a fluid pump which uses a rotationally symmetric container to pump fluid from an inlet reservoir to the outlet end of the rotationally symmetric container. The rotationally symmetric container is adapted to float with its axis of rotation vertical in a pump flotation chamber. The rotationally symmetric container floats and rotates in the fluid being pumped and uses the buoyancy of the fluid to carry its weight. A plurality of helically spiralling conduits proximate the periphery of the symmetric container forms a system of vacuum suction tubes designed to suck water from the inlet reservoir, proximate the bottom of the fluid pump, to the outlet end proximate the top of the container. The rotationally symmetric container operates at low rotational speed and requires a small horsepower motor to overcome water friction and water pressure. Under normal operation, the fluid filled spiral conduits form a heavy mass on the periphery of the rotationally symmetric container. This heavy rotating peripheral mass, in turn, generates sufficient centrifugal force and high torque to push fluid upward continuously from the inlet end of the rotationally symmetric container, through the helically spiralling conduits, and to discharge the fluid through the outlet end into the flotation chamber.

A centrifugal pitot pump has a rotor driven in rotation within a casing. A pitot tube pickup in a rotor chamber within the rotor intercepts rotating fluid and withdraws the fluid through a duct. The duct mounts the pitot tube and passes through the rotor casing. Fluid to be pumped passes through the annulus between the rotor and the duct and up through generally radial passages in the rotor into the rotor chamber. A leakage path from the rotor chamber to the inlet annulus between a hub of the pitot tube pickup and the rotor permits fluid to pass from the chamber into the annulus. A ring interrupts line-of-sight communication between the chamber and the annulus along the leak path and dissipates considerable of the leaking fluid velocity head to thereby improve the net positive suction head of the pump. The entrances of the radial passages in the rotor are large in the axial direction to reduce the sharpness of the turn from the annulus into these passages, to thereby reduce the net positive suction head required to operate the pump without cavitation.

This pitot pump is provided with pressure balancing for minimizing thrust loads on its bearings. The pump has a housing containing a rotatable casing mounted on a shaft. A fixed pitot tube is mounted in the casing for withdrawing pressurized fluid as the casing rotates and discharging the fluid through an axial outlet passage extending through one end wall of the casing. Fluid is introduced to the casing through the same end wall by way of an annular inlet passage coaxial with the outlet passage. The fluid flows from this inlet passage to the interior of the casing through a plurality of radiating passages in the end wall of the casing. When such a pump is used with a pressurized inlet fluid, an axial thrust on the casing bearings would result if it were not for the thrust balancing means. This comprises an axial balancing chamber between a portion of the end wall opposite the fluid inlet and a portion of the pitot tube. The interior of this chamber is in fluid communication with the suction inlet of a jet pump. Pressurized fluid from the pitot pump is applied to the jet inlet of the jet pump and the outlet of the jet pump is connected to the inlet to the pitot pump. Thus, pressure in the balancing chamber is reduced for minimizing axial thrust and any fluid entering the chamber from the interior of the casing is repressurized and returned to the pitot pump inlet.
