An apparatus and a method for determining a vibrational characteristic of a golf club shaft. The apparatus includes a table having a clamping structure for clamping the golf club shaft thereto. A multi-dimensional accelerometer is coupled to a tip end of the golf club shaft. The multi-dimensional accelerometer is also coupled to a computer. When the golf club shaft is vibrated, the multi-dimensional accelerometer converts the vibrational signal into an electrical signal which is transmitted to the computer. The computer conditions the electrical signal and outputs a signal indicative of the frequency of vibration of the golf club shaft. The stiffness of the golf club shaft is determined from the vibrational frequency of the golf club shaft.

A force transducer comprises a housing having a front and rear portions joined together by a platform, which platform is thinner than the housing portions. The platform contains at least one sensor which is operative to provide an output according to the extent of compression or expansion of the platform when a force is applied to the transducer housing. A compliant tubular member is secured at one end to the front portion of the housing and at the other end to the rear portion of the housing. The compliant tubular member surrounds the sensor to protect the sensor from the surrounding environment. The tubular member expands and contracts compliantly with the applied force so that the sensor which is mounted on the platform is substantially unimpeded by the tubular member and provides an output directly proportional to the force applied to the housing.

The method includes the steps of selecting a tensile load of interest for the test specimen, and bulk heating the test specimen at a localized region such that the test specimen is placed under the tensile load of interest. The method further provides for determining whether the tensile load of interest has caused a failure at the localized region. Bulk heating the test specimen provides a non-destructive evaluation technique that is unachievable through conventional approaches.

The load sensor 10is further provided with an elongated insertion member 24 to be inserted into the elastic conductive tube 21, and envelope members 25, which are provided at predetermined intervals in the longitudinal direction to enclose the insertion member 24, and together with the insertion member 24 are inserted into the tube 21 to separate the insertion member 24 from the tube 21. When the tube 21 is bent by the application of a load, the electrode members 22 and 23 contact the tube 21. The load is detected by determining whether the electrode members 22 and 23 have been rendered conductive via the tube 21. The sensitivity of the sensor 10 can be easily controlled by adjusting the interval between envelope members 25 and the thicknesses thereof.
