A method is disclosed for the preparation of granulated perborate salts having improved utility in compressible compositions such as those formed into denture cleanser tablets. The method broadly comprises forming a mixture of one or more perborate salts such as sodium perborate monohydrate and anhydrous sodium perborate, with a polymeric fluorocarbon such as polytetrafluoroethylene, with the polytetrafluoroethylene present in an amount ranging from about 0.01% to about 0.70% by weight of the perborate salt. The particles thus prepared exhibit combination of improved hardness and specific weight that facilitates their participation in the compressible cleanser composition, together with enhanced disintegration characteristics that are favorably imparted to the cleanser tablets.The present invention also includes the granular salts prepared by the method, which have a broad range of utility in detergents, cleansers and the like.

The described process relates to the production of carburizing agents by compacting carbon dusts with a binder, such as hydroxyethyl cellulose, with addition of water and an auxiliary gelling agent. The auxiliary gelling agents used is glyoxal and/or bases of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or ammoniacal water. At from 0.5 to 2% by weight the requirement of binder is so small that no noticeable changes in the analytical values for the carbon dust used appear. The molded bodies produced from the compositions are dried at from 20.degree. to 180.degree. C. Calcination is not required.

A process for the preparation of granules containing a high concentration of a viscous substance, which granules are free-flowing and are not likely to cake or agglomerate under normal storage conditions, characterized by the steps of incorporating in a viscous substance selected from the group consisting of higher alcohols having 8 to 18 carbon atoms and which are soft or molten or liquid at a temperature lower than 40.degree. C., and non-ionic surfactants having the formulae (I) and (II): ##STR1## andR.sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.m H (II)wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl having 4 to 18 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is alkyl or alkenyl having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, and n and m each is a number of from 1 to 50,(A) from about 40 to about 300% by weight, based on the weight of said viscous substance, of an organic or inorganic compound capable of being rapidly transformed to a hydrated salt by water of crystallization to form porous particles or capable of adsorbing physically water to form superficially porous particles, and (B) about 30 to about 100% by weight, based on the weight of said viscous substance, of an inorganic substance having a high affinity with said viscous substance and an effect of controlling the flowability of said viscous substance, then adding to the resulting mixture, (C) an aqueous solution of an inorganic or organic compound that is adhesive to the substance (A), said solution containing water in an amount sufficient to impart at least one mole of water of crystallization or saturated water of adsorption to the substance (A), kneading the mixture and granulating the kneaded mixture.

A granulation process for the production of high purity granules of salt material comprising:(a) a wet blend formed by intensively mixing together(i) particles of soluble fine water-soluble salt having a relatively wide size distribution over the range of from about -30 to about +325 screen size (Tyler mesh),(ii) water insoluble particles of about -150 screen size (Tyler mesh) with surface area above 1 M.sup.2 /gr, and(iii) sufficient water or saturated water solution to provide a moisture content of up to about 20% and preferably in the range of from about 5 to 15% by weight of the mixture,(b) granulating the wet blend from (a), preferably by pan granulation, and(c) drying and recovering the granular product.The product comprises a granular salt product which has the properties of high purity (up to 99% salt), uniform size distribution in the range of from about 2 to 4 mm, a crush strength of greater than about 3 lb/granule and generally in the range of from about 5 to 10 lbs. and a final moisture content of about 1.0% or less.

Agglomerated granular detergent compositions containing at least about 10% sodium tripolyphosphate on an anhydrous basis and from 4% to 20% of an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant are prepared by spraying on or otherwise adding an aqueous sodium silicate solution as an agglomerating agent. The rate of hydration of the sodium tripolyphosphate and the degree of agglomeration of the granular detergent composition is controlled by addition of a portion of the total surfactant to one or more dry ingredients other than a major part of the sodium tripolyphosphate and the addition of another portion of the surfactant to the major part of the sodium tripolyphosphate concurrent with or subsequent to the addition of the agglomerating agent to the sodium tripolyphosphate.
