Abstract: The invention provides a sulphur pellet comprising at least one H2S-suppressant, comprising in the range of from 60 to 100 wt % elemental sulphur, based on the total weight of the pellet. The invention further provides a process for the manufacture of sulphur pellets comprising at least one H2S-suppressant, comprising the steps of: (a) mixing elemental sulphur, one or more H2S-suppressants and optionally a filler in a mixing unit to obtain a mixture; (b) shaping and/or palletizing the mixture obtained in step (a) in a palletizing unit to obtain H2S-suppressant-comprising sulphur pellets. The invention further provides a process for the manufacture of a sulphur-comprising asphalt paving mixture comprising the steps of: (i) preheating bitumen at a temperature of between 140 and 180° C.; (ii) preheating aggregate at a temperature of between 140 and 180° C.; (iii) mixing the hot bitumen with the hot aggregate in a mixing unit, wherein sulphur pellets comprising H2S-suppressant according to the invention are added in at least one of the steps (i), (ii) or (iii). The invention also provides the use of a sulphur-comprising asphalt paving mixture comprising H2S-suppressant in the paving of roads.

Abstract: A process and apparatus for effecting the transportation of sulfur pellets with the recovery of sulfur fines is disclosed. This is accomplished by a combination of steps and apparatus which include pumping water from a water supply into solid sulfur pellets with a jet-venturi/eductor pumping system to produce a sulfur water slurry containing sulfur pellets and sulfur fines, pumping the sulfur water slurry with one or more rotating disk/boundary layer pumps to a series of static screens to remove large lumps and impurities, a sulfur fines slurry, and a washed sulfur pellet slurry, contacting the sulfur pellet slurry with a dewatering disk to remove substantially all the remaining water, transporting the dewatered sulfur pellets to storage, pumping the sulfur fines slurry to a hydrocyclone to separate all the water from the sulfur fines, recycling the recovered water to said water supply following the addition of an alkaline neutralizing agent when needed, and recovering the sulfur fines. The invention substantially reduces air pollution by reducing the amount of sulfur fines released into the air during the unloading of sulfur pellets in bulk. The hydraulic transportation feature of this invention eliminates the use of mechanical loaders, cranes, open air hoppers, and open air transfer points that normally create and disperse sulfur fines into the atmosphere during their use in the movement of solid sulfur. It enables sulfur pellet transfer operations to take place in most weather conditions, rather than requiring interruption when wind speed and time exceed regulatory guidelines. The State of Florida requires operators to cease the unloading of sulfur pellets from a marine vessel whenever wind speed exceeds 18 miles per hour for a 5-minute time span.

Abstract: an improved process for the granulation or coating of hygroscopic or nonhygroscopic materials where melt is sprayed onto cascading granules of common or uncommon substrate in an enclosed vessel such as a rotary drum preferably with lifting flights which provide maximum mixing of the granules and the atmosphere enclosed in the unit and where heat given off by solidification of the melt is absorbed by evaporation of water which is atomized as an extremely fine mist into areas of the vessel which are not subtended by falling granules. Evaporation is effected without impingement of the mist on the granules or vessel internals. Air for evaporation is pulled through the vessel concurrent with the flow of granules and its moisture content is regulated below the critical humidity of the granules throughout the vessel. Some recycle of undersize granules discharged from the vessel is maintained for size control; however, examples show the recycle rate decreased by 87 percent over recycle cooled processes as 73 percent of the heat evolved is removed by evaporation of water mist. An equation is developed which mathematically represents the thermodynamics of the process and specific values are presented for variables when granulating sulfur or urea.
