A text editing system is described which is comprised of single technology elements. That is, the system is comprised of dynamic shift registers which are entirely implemented with either magnetic bubble domain devices or charge coupled devices. These shift registers can be randomly accessed using write and read decoders to provide great flexibility in entry, retrieval, and restoring of data. An editing shift register is used for text editing functions, such as insertion of data, deletion of data, etc. This editing shift register performs the data manipulation functions by using techniques such as freezing of data bits and bypassing of data bits in order to change the order of the data and to close gaps which may occur in the data. The shift registers used for storage and the editing shift register are characterized in that all data manipulation functions and all accessing functions do not require a change in the sequence of the drive field used to move the data bits.

The alpha-numeric symbols and function signals required for the final automatic typing in an electronic typewriter are stored as code words in a plurality of circulating shift registers, one for each binary place of the code word. When a symbol (code word) is to be inserted into or deleted from the stored sequence of code words, the number of stages of each shift register is temporarily, respectively, increased or decreased by one stage. For an insertion, the proper instant at which to enter the code word to be inserted is determined by a comparator output. The comparator input compares the count on a register counter counting the synchronizing pulses shifting the information through the shift registers to the count on an address counter. The count on the address counter signifies the position on the paper being typed upon at which the insertion is to be made.

A method of printing a print image on a print medium using a printer includes providing a text printing mode, wherein a first predetermined number of bits identify a selected character to be printed. A host based printing mode is provided wherein selected bits each indicate whether a corresponding pixel should be printed. The printer is initialized to print in either one of the text printing mode and the host based printing mode. A second predetermined number of bits of a data stream associated with the print image to be printed are received within the printer. The second predetermined number of bits is examined to determine a presence of a command therein. The printer is enabled to print in an enabled printing mode. The enabled printing mode includes either the text printing mode or the host based printing mode, dependent upon the examination of the second predetermined number of bits. The printer is used to print on the print medium in the enabled printing mode.

A plurality of logical printers are provided in one unit of physically existing printing apparatus and one logical printer is allotted to each one of host devices so that processing of the print data from a plurality of host devices can be carried out in parallel. Prevention of deterioration of quality is achieved by selecting a method of forming (for example, by rescaling when the font is scalable) a pattern having a different resolution according to the type of font in a case in which a drawing object is formed on the basis of print data. Further, prevention of deterioration of quality is achieved where a drawing object is shared among a plurality of pages by forming another drawing object when a decreased resolution is desired.

A decrease in print speed due to the change of the output resolution can be prevented.
