Abstract:
A reflector for a reflector antenna is provided for producing a far field pattern with near-zero field strength at a predetermined position, the reflector having a surface comprising a stepped profile for generating the near-zero field strength. The stepped profile may comprise a radial step. The location of the near-zero field strength can be steered by moving the reflector only or by adjusting the amplitude and phase of an additional low resolution beam, produced by, for example, a simple horn, covering the same region.
Abstract:
A rectal thermal monitor for transrectal prostate temperature measurement includes a handle arranged in a proximal end portion of the monitor for gripping by a user, an elongate shaft extending from the handle, and an expandable distal probe portion arranged on a distal end of the shaft. The distal probe portion is arranged at a position opposite the handle portion, and is shaped to facilitate insertion through an anal sphincter and into a rectum of a patient. A cover element, is provided for covering at least a portion of the distal probe portion, and is made from a resilient material. A temperature sensing element is arranged within the distal probe portion, beneath the cover element, and is adapted and configured to sense a temperature of the prostate of the patient through the rectum wall of the patient. Further, and actuator can be provided to actuate the expandable distal probe portion, to increase a diameter thereof.
Abstract:
A system for ablating tissue includes a reusable control unit including a processor monitoring and controlling ablation and a control interface receiving input to and output from the processor in combination with a disposable procedure set releasably connectable to the control unit to couple to the control interface for communication with the processor.
Abstract:
A breast cup for use with a breast pump for expressing breast milk is provided. The breast cup sealingly separates the air flow from the breast milk, provides a barrier against impingement of the flexible insert by the user's breast and provides a massaging member for facilitating expression of the breast milk.
Abstract:
A human food product comprises a higher ploidy strain of Fungi imperfecti of which each parent has a genetic growth constraint not shared by the other parent. One parent is for example auxotrophic for two compounds selected from histidine, arginine, leucine and adenine and the other for the other two. The nucleic acid content of the strain is preferably less than 2% by weight. The strain may be made by killing a higher ploidy strain of Fungi imperfecti and simultaneously reducing its nucleic acid content to below 2% by weight by treatment with water. The process may include preparing a higher ploidy strain of edible Fusarium by culturing two auxotrophs thereof together in a medium containing nutrients permitting both to grow and then culturing organisms derived from such culture in minimal medium. The invention is applicable to the production of human food by culturing the strain in conditions such that reversion or partial reversion to the haploid form(s) is minimised.
Abstract:
An active transponder of an identification system comprises a memory for storing coded information and supplying it to a transmitter output, and data means independent of the memory for supplying further information to the output. The transponder has a battery and the data means can comprise detectors which detect when the voltage of the battery falls below respective predetermined levels. The data means can also comprise input connections arranged to receive signals representing the updated values of respective parameters. These signals are supplied to respective inputs of a data selector independently of the memory.
Abstract:
An instrument for reconfiguring stomach tissue includes a sealing member that seals a section of a tissue manipulator from contact with bodily fluids. The tissue manipulator includes a first portion that is configured for releasable coupling to an actuating member and a second portion configured to receive an implant to be deployed within the patient. The tissue manipulator also includes a rectangular member and a cavity for receiving a coupler of the actuating member. The tissue manipulator has a first member with tissue penetrating elements and a second member with engaging elements configured to deflect the tissue penetrating elements upon relative movement of the first and second members. The actuating member includes a tissue penetrating element support positioned to limit bending of the tissue manipulator. The instrument includes an actuating mechanism that is configured to move at least one of the first and second members of the tissue manipulator.
Abstract:
A satellite antenna arrangement for a satellite communication system comprising: a reflector for producing a far field pattern with near-zero field strength at a predetermined location to reject unwanted signals from said predetermined location or minimise signal power transmitted to said predetermined location, the reflector having a surface comprising a stepped profile arranged to generate the near-zero field strength in the predetermined location. The stepped profile may comprise a radial step. The location of the near-zero field strength can be steered by moving the reflector or by adjusting the amplitude and phase of an additional beam that covers substantially the same region as the main beam reflected by the reflector.
