A specific magnet roll design for high speed semi-conductive magnetic brush (SCMB) development systems for magnetic image character recognition (MICR) printing is provided. The resulting magnetic field distributions include a more uniform radial field and enhance solid area development and halftone graininess without or substantially without bead carryout issues. In addition, this enhancement of solid area development enables magnetic toner in these hill speed SCMB systems that normally would not provide sufficient development latitude for MICR.

An apparatus for developing a latent image recorded on an imaging surface, including a housing defining a reservoir storing a supply of developer material including toner. A donor member is spaced from the imaging surface, for transporting toner on an outer surface of the donor member to a region opposed from the imaging surface. A mag roll loads toner onto a region of the outer surface of the donor member. A charging device ion charges the toner loaded on the region of the donor member. An AC/DC voltage supply for biasing the donor member positioned in close proximity to the imaging member to detach toner from the donor member as to form a toner cloud for developing the latent image. A second charging device discharges and removes residual toner on the region of the donor and returning the toner to the reservoir.

A system for removing residual contaminants from an image conditioning apparatus that removes excess liquid from a developed image made up of toner particles immersed in a liquid carrier medium on an image bearing member. The system includes a vacuum blotting device that contacts the liquid developed image and absorbs a portion of the liquid carrier and residual contaminants remain thereon. A contact member adapted to be shifted from a non-operative position spaced from the vacuum blotting device, to an operative position in contact with the vacuum blotting device operates to transfer the contaminants therefrom. A scraper removes the transferred contaminants from the contact member. The contact member is pivotally mounted about the pivot point to effect shifting of the contact member between the non-operative and the operative position.

A method and apparatus for simultaneously developing and transferring a liquid toner image. The method includes the steps of moving a photoreceptor including a charge bearing surface having a first electrical potential, applying a uniform layer of charge having a second electrical potential onto the charge bearing surface, and imagewise dissipating charge from selected portions on the charge bearing surface to form a latent image electrostatically, such that the charge-dissipated portions of the charge bearing surface have the first electrical potential of the charge bearing surface. The method also includes the steps of moving an intermediate transfer member biased to a third electrical potential that lies between said first and said second potentials, into a nip forming relationship with the moving imaging member to form a process nip. The method further includes the step of introducing charged liquid toner, having a fourth electrical potential, into the process nip, such that liquid toner sandwiched within the nip simultaneously develops image portions of the latent image onto the intermediate transfer member, and background portions of the latent image onto the charge bearing surface of the photoreceptor.

A tandem tri-level architecture. Three tri-level engines are arranged in a tandem configuration. Each engine uses one of the three primary colors plus one other color. Spot by spot, two color tri-level images can be created by each of the engines. The spot by spot images are transferred to an intermediate belt member, either in a spot on spot manner for forming full color images or in a spot next to spot manner to form highlight or logo color images. The images created by the tri-level engines can also be transferred to the intermediate in a manner such that both spot next to spot and spot on spot transfer is effected.
