Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods to reduce interference in heterogeneous networks having a plurality of access nodes, such as combinations of macro cells, micro cells, pico cells, femto cells, etc. are disclosed. Interference caused in sectors of two or more access nodes that face each other is minimized by dividing a total number of resource blocks into resource block sets that are uniquely numbered and allocated across each sector of each access node. The allocation is rotated based on a different time stamp or a different starting number, or may be a random sequence of sets per access node. These independent allocations for each access node generally distribute the interference across the system, and provide better interference reduction, resulting in an increase in system capacity per sector of each cell.

Abstract: Mitigating interference in distributed antenna systems (DAS) includes determining, at a processing node of the DAS, that a first wireless device attached to a first access node is within a coverage area of one or more antennae of the DAS, and transmitting, from the processing node to the first access node, a request to trigger a handover of the first wireless device from the first access node to the DAS. The first access node triggers the handover by instructing the first wireless device to perform a signal measurement.

The method also includes allocating backhaul bandwidth of the relay node to each of the plurality of small cell relay nodes based at least partially on the priority for each of the plurality of small cell relay nodes.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for allocating resource blocks based on uplink transmission parameters, resulting in beneficial coverage and capacity of a wireless system. A headroom report that comprises a transmission power headroom for a wireless device may be received. Potential resource block allocations for the wireless device may be generated based on channel information for a plurality of frequency bands, the generated potential resource block allocations comprising a frequency band and a time slot. A potential resource block allocation may be selected from among the potential resource block allocations based on a maximum power reduction for the allocation and the reported transmission power headroom for the wireless device. The selected resource blocks may then be allocated for the wireless device.

Abstract: Estimating uplink interference includes determining any wireless devices having available uplink resources, and instructing the wireless devices to estimate and report uplink interference. A method for estimating uplink interference in a wireless network includes determining that a wireless device attached to an access node has available resources within an uplink schedule of the wireless device, and instructing the wireless device to enter a listening mode during the available resources of the uplink schedule. In the listening mode, the wireless device determines a measurement of an uplink interference caused at the wireless device. The method further includes receiving the measurement of the uplink interference from the wireless device via an uplink channel.

Abstract: Exemplary embodiments described herein include systems, methods, and nodes for distributing relay wireless devices across an access node. Network identification numbers associated with at least two wireless devices may be determined. At an access node, a traffic class identifier and frequency band may be assigned to the at least two wireless devices, wherein each frequency band available for communication at the access node is assigned at most a maximum number of wireless devices comprising a network identification number that meets the criteria. Data may then be communicated between the access node and the at least two wireless devices according to the assigned traffic class identifiers and frequency bands, wherein the wireless devices comprise relay wireless devices that relay data between the access node and one or more small cells.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for extending coverage of a wireless device. A handover trigger threshold may be established for a plurality of wireless devices located in a coverage area of an access node. Abstract: A relay wireless device is configured to function as a relay on behalf of a donor access node. The relay wireless device determines a preferred donor access node from among a plurality of candidate donor access nodes based on a comparison with a number of thresholds for reliable and efficient provision of services to end-user wireless devices via the relay wireless device. Any access node that meets the threshold requirements is added to a list of candidate donor access nodes. The candidate donor access node that best meets the thresholds may be selected as the preferred donor access node, and a connection request submitted to the preferred donor access node.
